Back Protector

Long story short, I injured my back at work quite awhile ago and I'm finding it difficult to ride more than 30-45 minutes or so.

Will a back protector help alleviate the stress?

( I wanted to go on some longer day trips, but right now it seems like 2 hours is the absolute maximum for riding without a really long break )

If my back doesn't get better, I'm going to have to trade in my bike for a Sports Touring.

My friend, you need to do some core exercises! When your body suffers an injury, your muscles become extremely weak. You need to strengthen these muscles again and using things as braces will only hinder your progress.

There's a lot of core exercises you can do that will strengthen your back muscles as well as obliques and abs.

Of course, consult your doctor first but I'm sure your need some muscle rehabilitation!

Motocross Kidney Belt sorta work for me, but I didn't really hurt my back, as bad as you probably.

The back muscles are considered part of the core...

True. Most often people who workout, only think about what they see in the mirror (the front, chest, biceps, abs, quads) this is just asking for problems. Got to balance it out.

Since your injured, you could do modified exercises and get the strength back up.

Look at you posture in the mirror from the side, I'd say most people fall under kyphosis especially anyone who sits infront of a computer all day for work.

Back pain is not a life sentence. There are different ways to heal your back so you can enjoy doing everything you used to do. Try not to rely on support devices as you are suggesting, they are only a crutch and will exacerbate the problem over time.

Though with age and the prior injury the exercises are probably something you will have to perform for the rest of your life. Still, it's better than letting your body slowly degenerate.

And to answer your question, no. Back protectors are designed to allow us much freedom of movement as possible, not support your back.

From what I see motorcycle back protectors are designed to limit the hyperextension of the back (bending your head too far backward) as well as some blunt force to the spine. There is not enough support in this type of back protector to address chronic back pain.

Exercising your core is the best answer, but this does not work for everyone. An orthotic back brace will give you much better control and support. There are different braces for each injury type. These braces support you so well that you may lose strength in your core. Without proper supplemental exercise your body may begin to rely too much on the brace. With an orthopaedic brace and exercise you should be able to resume riding.

Not quite everything fastar1, although I wish that :)

Back injuries can get better with therapy and exercise to a certain extent, but in some situations you may never be like before, being able to do just whatever you want.

To OP, a more comfortable riding position, according to your injury (to avoid further agravating it) would make a huge difference. Nonetheless, before you should try to see if stretching and exercising (with medical advice) could reduce the discomfort. Depends what type of injury and did you have that diagnosed ?

Before you trade your bike in, try getting clip on raisers. They really helped with my old GSXR.

Or, if you don't mind looking like a stunter, try doing a handlebar conversion w/ high bend bars (e.g. protaper kx high)

I believe it's true. I mean, we all lose some abilities gradually with age, but we shouldn't lose any abilities due to back injury. Muscles heal and can be trained. Bones heal too, slowly. Even discs heal eventually. Only the spinal column doesn't regenerate but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Not quite :( I missed a month of riding completelly this year because of that :( And still struggling if I will go today to the track or not.

Try yoga. I mentioned it before but it does work. Also, a back brace (not protector) is what you want but it may be uncomfortable if you're leaned over on your bike curently as it will try to put your posture in the correct position.

They take years to heal, from what I've heard and experienced. I'm into year two of recovery and I know a guy who took four years before he was back to his normal self. It takes years of discipline and exercise and avoiding aggravating the disc with things like a SS bike LOL!

yes!!! BACK PROTECTOR + GOOD SUIT WILL HELP!!!

I have a bad back, and I can do 1200km days in a back protector + Full suit
