Who cares really

amen

Nonsense like this shows you the sad state of todays society and where their priorities are. This is the same couple that spent 50 million on a wedding...

Then I hope you don't follow NBA, MLB, Moto GP, F1, and NHL religiously like a soap opera. Not saying that there's anything wrong with that, but it's entertainment just like anything else...and I think it just goes to show that our problems really aren't that bad when all we have to worry about is what's going on in the next episode.

2 issues with this comment:

1. Athletes spend their lives (and give up everything they were familiar with) in order to compete. They entertain us, so we pay money to see them perform. Their careers are generally pretty short, so the payout that they get is -mostly- justifiable. Also, they get money from us because we WANT to pay them - it is not inherited. How does the Royal family entertain anyone? What have they done aside from collect Millions (Billions?) in taxpayer money based on their previous ownership of the kingdom? Why are they still collecting money (if they are, i really dunno)?

2. "Our" problems are very real and serious, depending on where and how a person choses to focus his/her attention. Poverty, joblessness, hunger, illnesses, the environment - pick your poison (internationally, or even right here on Canadian soil). Wouldn't we -as a humanity- be better off focusing our attention on these things, rather than some rich twats that offer nothing current & useful to our (or anyone's) society?

1st world problems, fo sho.

Fair points, my dude. This topic's come up a bunch of times already and you could make the same argument for any celebrity. Yes, athletes might "deserve" it more, but it depends who's gauging it. I'm definitely not saying that celebrities aren't privileged, but you'd have to also pay me millions to take away my privacy, be in the spotlight 24/7, and have every little thing that I do when I'm not working scrutinized. I would argue that athletes (for the most part) aren't harassed at the same level.

The whole world doesn't talk **** when an athlete has a bad hair day and as someone who's served both athletes and famous celebrities/movie stars, I can tell you that an athlete can live a more normal public life than a celebrity ever can.

Also, I've got nothing to say back about your tax-collecting point. You got me there hahaha

Celebrities and athletes suck ***. Paid millions to play with a ball, or chase a chunk of rubber. Not saying it doesn't take skill, just don't care if they can only make 100 mil in 10 years, take some $ get educated and get a real job when your sports career is over. Doctors/paramedics/cops/soldiers etc save lives and risk their own every day for peanuts. Society as a whole is pretty screwed up, especially when people defend these poor athletes/celebrities, they asked to be famous and rich. Personally, I admire everyday people like Sonny The Bull, financially he did well for himself and he passes it on by helping others in need, can you say silent hero?

The pay out athletes get is justified because they have short careers? You must be kidding me. Some guy standing in a field waiting to catch a baseball is not worth the tens or hundreds of millions. Proof? A Rod. Waste of skin dope taking loser who makes WAY too much money
