The Avon Storm II Ultras I have on my ST currently have 22,000km on them. The rear is showing wear bars and the front has about another 1,000km before it will be the same. I have heard the stories about failures with these tires, as well as with Dunlops, Michelins, Bridgestones, etc, so I believe this can happen to any tire made by any manufacturer. In view of the great performance I have received from my Avons, I just ordered another pair from Pete's.
Absolutely correct. Marketing has some thinking they are "premium" simply because they tell people so. It is "perceived." They are no better than other brands on any given day, IMHO.
Some facts:
Avon has been making tires for over a 100 years. OEM on many motorcycles such as Triumph here in N.A. and many outside North America.

This tire failure has been discussed at length on other ST boards. Avon does not recommend the Storm Ultra 2 for the ST1300. The 160/70 17 I'm currently running on my ST1100 is reinforced for the heavy ST, the 170/60 17 is not. This summer 3 days on southern Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia roads got the "chicken strips" down to about 1/4". Great tire, sticks virtually the same as the Z6, lasts longer and I have no concerns about it.

Avons are comparable to Dunlops, Pirellis and Michelins as far as being well recognized quality brands go. They just aren't popular this side of the pond.
As I said, personal bias, which I'm sure we all have a bit of.
There is some background to my bias though. First car I ever bought was a '92 Mercury Cougar in '02, the car came with brand new Cooper tires (Cooper owns Avon tires) from the dealer. Within 20k km, the belts in all four tires had shifted so badly the car was unsafe to drive. When driving above say 70km/h, just touching the steering wheel in a direction would cause the car to sway from side to side, higher the speed, worse it got. I've also seen many more shifted belts on budget priced tires compared to more premium priced tires.
