At-Fault Accident at 16

I know you guys probably get alot of questions like this but I have yet to see a young driver with an at fault.
So as the title says... I got into an at fault accident two years ago at 16, with my G2. I now have my M1 (last week) and just passed my G test a couple days ago. A lot of people say that no company will insure me because of my one accident and cause im still under 25. Im looking to get the a used ninja 250, with just liability coverage, will insurers even give me a chance or is it not worth it to ask?

I know a lot of young riders on this forum that got horrible quotes because of even one violation so thats why im so cautious. Looking at my options I have Jevco, Statefarm, TD, and Primmum (from the decision tree), will any of these companies give a first accident forgiveness?

Im just looking for rough estimates and I will probably end up calling the companies in a week or so and Ill post the rates I get too.

Call and ask, then you'll know...

+1

TD is probably your best bet. SF has 1 minor ticket 'forgiveness' I believe but don't think they will count an accident as minor. TD does have that, and if you have a car or a family policy with them it might be better than the other options.

I had an at fault accident at 18 and I got insurance on my bike at 20. 0 - 3 years from the date of your accident you're considered high risk so your premiums will be high. If you're over 2 years from your accident you will find insurance it'll just be high. Try TD or MM gave me okay quotes.

buy a dirt bike. for one year of your insurance premium you`ll have a nice dirt bike paid for :)

Accidents affect your insurance for up to 6 years after, not 3.

Facility is required to provide you with a quote (although a high one). Call an insurance broker and ask. Personally I expect the quote will be high enough that riding (on the street) isn't worthwhile for the next few years. For the amount you would spend on insurance you could probably buy a truck, trailer and dirtbike.

Keep in mind that even dirt bikes have to be insured unless you own the property they are being ridden on.

True, but off-road insurance is likely to be an order of magnitude lower than street insurance (if he can get it, I don't know if there is the equivalent of facility for off-road policies).

They're on your abstract for 6 years, but after 3 years insurances give reasonable quotes on insurance because you are considered mid risk as opposed to high risk.

I had an at-fault accident when I was 17 and a minor ticket when I was 18.

I got an insurance quote at the age of 17 for $3500. I waited a year and ended up paying about $1900 when I was 18.

When I was Jevco (Intact) they didn't consider the accident as it was in a car, not a motorcycle. Bigger companies like TD/StateFarm/RBC/etc care.

Right now, I'm insured with SF with the accident still on my record. I started policy when I had both ticket and accident on my record. Now I pay about $1450 (22).

Assuming you're 16, you'd probably looking in the $3500-$4000 range with Facility (Call a broker).

Never heard of this.... My insurance only went down on the third year because I turned 21.

Most probably dependent on the insurance company, but I've never heard of this.

Then why do most ask if you have ever been in an accident or made a claim in the last 6 years?
Tickets are 3 years, I think you got the same drop in insurance PLau did as you turned 21.

Because an accident is on your record for 6 years but making an accident this year and getting insurance you insurance will be high, getting insurance 3 years after your accident, your insurance won't be as high because you've been accident free for 3 years. I don't know how else to explain this just google star rating for insurance they don't do this anymore but the same idea applies. And yes changing from the 18-20 bracket on insurance to 21-24 did reduce my insurance quite a bit.

@ OP
just wait 1 more year. season's a bit over half over

insurance can only go down if your record stays clean with no additional tickets/accidents.
**generally** sometimes insurance increase by 5% - 10% depending on area and age group and bike you ride...i.e. lots of theif on that model, or a lot of people crash that model, or more accidents in the area which you live in.....or the best part....if insurance companys just get greedy

plus buying a bike over the winter is when it's cheapest.
