Are other riders actions turning cagers against us......?

I suppose that's a bit of a provocative headline, but it seems to be a question worth asking. I wonder if people in cars aren't annoyed by some riders weaving in and of traffic, passing on the right at ridiculous speeds, and (this one is nuts) driving in between lanes to pass? Does this affect people's attitudes toward riders, and does it potentially hurt those of us who do not do these things? I liken it to cabs. Generally, people don't like the way cabbies drive, and they can be very discourteous, so people are less likely to give them leeway. Well, are safe, cautious courteous riders suffering for the actions of the minority, and what can be done to lessen the unfair reputation that we all must drive this way? Seems there is a segment of the riding population that is a menace on the roads, and it makes us all look bad.

Unfortunately, that is the way life works... Nobody remembers the good things people (or groups in this case) do but will hang onto something negative forever, tell their friends etc...

Yes. That's where all the biker hate comes from. Everyone just assumes if you ride a bike (especially a sport bike or anything that resembles a sport bike) that you ignore all traffic laws.

Thanks guys that I saw flying down the 401 at 200+ on my way back from Ajax yesterday. I was doing 140 and you guys flew by like traffic was at a standstill. In t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops of course.

Although it doesn't help that most drivers don't actually know the laws so they'll get ****** if you pass on a solid line or double solid even though it's actually legal (the single solid is just a lane marker and double solid means passing is not advised). I knew this already but had it reaffirmed by an instructor at a driver's training course I took last week.

Yep. I get told about the weaving sport bikes, the dual sport lane splitters and the arse wipes with loud pipes walking up babies all the time.

There was this incident. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbTZkZTYkaM - this was rage at other motorcyclists and not
necessarily the ones in the video, so it does happen.

On Saturday, I was following a pickup with ATV in the back in basically the same type of road, was about to pass,
and just said screw it, got thinking about the above video. It wasn't a road I was familiar with, and didn't care to find
out the hard way if the locals were having issues with motorcycles.

so you were breaking the law, and got upset because others were breaking the law worse than you?

Yes we all get tarred by the actions of other riders, but do you really care that much? Being on a bike allows me to stay ahead of traffic and out of trouble far easier than in a car. Im faster, I can brake harder and turn quicker, and I can squeeze into spaces that cars can't. If you have this ability and combine it with strong road-awareness you'll never get in trouble. Who gives a damn what the cager thinks of you? I personally don't need car drivers to give me leeway or more space or any special consideration, because I'm in charge of keeping myself safe by not relying on them in the first place.

When I need to do a 'questionable' pass like the one you describe, I do it with signals, I only go about 5-10kmh faster than the car Im passing (if there is ample room ahead) and I give a wave after I merge back into the lane. Nobody can get mad at you for passing like that...

They aren't mad because we break the law, they are mad because they're stuck in a cage. I believe the term is jealousy!

I wasn't that upset. You're right though, it is kind of hypocritical. But I was going with the flow of traffic going a much more reasonable speed. It's mostly that it makes us look bad that bothers me.

I'm just impressed that you could identify flip flops in a blink of an eye.

I don't mind people in their cars being a little intimidated by bikes, but I don't need to be singled out by the cops either.

Our buddy in the star today doing 177kph sounds so irrational. But based on the number of cars I have try to race at lights, I'm thinking that people don't realize this could be a blip of the throttle (depending on the bike).

The number of times in the past month I've seen motorcycles using bike lanes to get ahead of traffic is starting to get to me...

In the past two weeks, saw 3 people making a left from Fort York blvd to Bathurst from the bike lane, and two people on Queens Quay passing stopped cars via the bike lane to get to the front of the line.

Now if they wave, I give the single finger wave back :)

Kind of off topic, but any of you have cars waving you on to pass? Been happening a lot not tail gating or anything just riding in blocking position and going with the flow, then the car waves you on to pass them. Do they just assume we like to speed all the time? Unless it's in the twisties I don't mind following a car, normally not in a rush to get anywhere.

Occasionally I see car drivers giving me room to pass or waving me by, assuming I wanna go faster. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I'll usually wave my hand in a 'no thank you' kinda manner if I don't wanna pass em. It's a nice gesture IMO.

Yeah I've noticed lately on the highway that every now and then I'll end up behind a car that is riding the far side of the lane as if he's expecting me to lane split. I almost don't like it because it makes it that much more tempting to do it... that big gap all the way down the highway when you're crawling along at idle (8 km/hr)... sooo tempting.

And this is for the guy that was on 400 southbound near Major Mac this morning at 8am riding the red CBR.
If you are stupid enough to weave in and out of traffic like you were doing at least learn to signal, in the time that I was able to see you ,,you weaved in and out of 2 transport trucks and a car and not once did you signal.
Please learn to signal or get off of our hiways, you were a menace.
.

Yesterday on the 401 coming up to Morningside heading west around 5:00pm two b boys in a hurry passing cars in their lanes. Now if the old lady flipped out because of the surprise of a bike 5 inches from her window in her lane had a nervous left hand twitch i would have been late for dinner. Don't do it or at least ride the white lines.

A holes! I had to listen to a lecture from my dad who was in the car because he now thinks that's how i roll.

Since this has turned into a rant...

Last Thursday morning, collector lanes southbound, traffic was around 100kph, i was in the far left lane, right side (blocking position).

Dear jackass Duc rider that decided it would be fine to pass me, in my lane, on my left.

Yer a dick.

That is all.

If I didn't watch out for people, I could probably stack up 4 or 5 bikers a year all safe and legal.

They don't notice me risking my stopping by letting off the brakes when they follow too close, to give them that extra dozen feet that they need to "outbrake" me.

The riding community seems to be getting more, me first and @#$& you. I noticed many fallen rider notices this week, maybe the cage community is getting to be the same way.
