Apple AirTag FTW!

I follow this runner from BC on Youtube - recently he had his Van stolen - he managed to recover it thanks to Apple Airtag!
Real life story for ya :)

Lots of people use this on their luggage now, and have proven airlines in the wrong when they state luggage was delayed or lost.
Meanwhile airlines donate luggage to "charities" and don't even attempt to retrieve it even when you tell them where it is and CTA does nothing. Our airlines probably steal more than our unhoused and get far fewer charges.

I'm glad this is providing some recourse to people, but I don't trust Apple to not render these nearly useless for either liability reasons or police complaining about being asked to investigate things

what fascinates me is such a cheap and small piece of tech can make so much difference. I also read reports about Motocycles recovered from containers ready to go oversea in LA... but the example above is just close to home here and now in Canada. The guy who recovered his van doesn't have much money so it would've been a serious financial lost for him...

Police already complain. They tell you not to investigate and get very mad if you do while also doing nothing themselves other than giving you a report number. The whole model is completely broken.

I haven't watched the video. Most of those van-life people have many many hours invested in customizing them and making them work for their lifestyle. On one hand, you get to start again and fix issues you identified, on the other hand, you would like somewhere warm, dry and well-equipped to do it all again.

replaced my first AirTAg battery last November - I bought my first pair of them as soon as they got released so one lasted 1.5years, the second is still up but I have a warning to replace battery running low.

They also get used the opposite way.

Criminals use them now to tag cars in the mall parking lot to find out where they sleep (saves driving around in hoods to do their vehicle shopping). A good friend had his beautifully restored 69 Camaro stolen from his barn/garage, cops figured it was tagged at a car show, it was stolen a few nights afterwards. They are also getting used a lot by stalkers (lazy ones I guess).

Long story short, I think at some point there will be more to say about the technology...

My dog has one attached to her collar. Hopefully we’ll never have to use it to track her, but it brings peace of mind.
More people should do that. The number of "lost dog. It was a rescue so will run if it sees you" posts is astounding. You know your bleeping animal will ghost and you do very little to help yourself.

Check this ElevationLab AirTag waterproof case for pets (they call it "TagVault") - I think it's the best, my g/f uses it for her dog. they also have cool flat surface waterproof cases can be used for boats, bikes, cars, etc. I think these guys have the best product hands down!

Aren't tags being used by thieves to label cars in parking lots so they can be tracked and picked up at more convenient locations?
Yup. Post 12. I don't have a good answer to that. Apple will notify you if you are around a tag it doesn't know about for a long time but as I understand it, the delay is long enough that you are already home and the car is stolen. This probably needs to be shortened up to minutes in some situations. For instance, the phone knows your gps position. If you are in a car, it should notify you in minutes, if I am at a restaurant, ignore tags until I start moving again, if I am in a plane, don't count time in the air. I don't carry an apple device so nothing would ever notify me.

The last part is the rub.... you will be tracked by other phones even if you don't have an apple phone. Your neighbour's phone may be selling you out....

That’s not a dog.
An oversized rat on a leash.
