Anyone use AirBnB here?

Looking to take my wife to Boston for the Thanksgiving weekend as it's our first anniversary and with hotel pricing around $300-500/night I'm looking at other options with AirBNB as something that was mentioned to me by a work colleague....anyone try that out and how was the experience? Just looking for a simple place to stay and be as close to downtown as possible so that I don't have to drive. Booked a hotel about 20miles out of Boston for $170 but would prefer to be much closer. And before anyone says 'splurge on your anniversary' we're trying to buy a house so costs do count. We are planning on driving down, but if we can find a good enough price may fly down with Porter or another airline.

Ideally would be a hotel as it's 'safer bet' I guess...but am open to suggestions.

Thanks!

To not sour your whole experience with Airbnb, you should go with a host that is highly reviewed, with good ratings before venturing out to the new hosts. Those highly reviewed will offer small perks such as snacks/water/meals au-gratis and are generally better mannered. I use it all the time when travelling and have never had a "bad" experience--just varying levels of good/great.

I hate hotels, and hate paying to valet my car, so finding a condo/house with free parking is typically one of my "must haves".
For those thinking of travelling with a bike, I typically find/message hosts to see if they can accomodate a bike in their garage before booking as well. Ain't nothing like riding through under 10*c and rain to Ottawa, and pulling into a dry/warm/clean garage.

I find its hit or miss. You really have to do your research.

Had a couple of really good experiences in the US, but booked an apartment in Amsterdam for IBC and it was right above the Tranny Bar in Rembrandtplein. Not that there is anything wrong with that :-) Its just that its open to 5:00 AM and is quite loud.

Used them twice on my trip end of august... Had good experiences with both. I would say look carefully at the reviews before you decide between places. If you value your privacy, it may or may not be good, for instance, the first night the guy I rented from left me alone, and I had an entire wing of a cottage to myself. The next night, I stayed in someone's house, and the hosts insisted that I have dinner with them and we had conversations for a couple of hours (not that I mined because they were great people!).
