Anyone know how much a decent car paint-job costs

Just my opinion...

Without cutting corners while also not getting crazy (and NO colour change) you are looking at ~1500 for a very basic job with reasonable prep, 2500 to 5K if there is actual body work to be done.

Just a rough range for a legit shop to do the job, you may find one a little cheaper but basically 500 in materials and another 20 or so hours of labour.

Some of the cheap places cut corners like just taping off trim and doing poor prep and using cheap paint.

The bodywork is basically all done and the car is in the rough (primer for the most part)

Just my 2c, but normally they can never duplicated the quality and flexibility of the OEM paint.
I won't repaint a car unless it was necessary

considered vinly wrap? 1500-2000k BUT when you change your mind its easier :p

Seriously though.. you can get one done for closer to 1k but the paint underneath needs to be solid. Won't adhere properly to primer.

Primer doesn't seal against moisture getting into the metal and neither does vinyl wrap. It still needs a proper finish to adhere to. Otherwise, it'll rust underneath the vinyl wrap and/or primer.

But the great part is the vinyl will keep all the pieces of the car held together when the rust eats all the metal away.

Vinyl, paint..... so friggen expensive. Plastidip that b!tch instead. I've heard nothing but awesome results about plastidipping.... and it's only $600 (last I heard) to dip an entire car professionally. Of course there are drawbacks but you be the judge if the pros outweight the cons:
