I've been in Hawaii and we bumped into some dude who was practicing it at the beach. He told us about how he learned it from a renowned westerner (Bruce Frantzis) who went to China and had to be adopted by a teacher to learn under him (it was frowned upon at the time to spread the knowledge to the west, apparently). For all I know, the dude was a crazy hippie, but it still begs the question...
The simplified ignorant-sounding question is:You know how in the movies, that westerner goes on a journey, hikes up the mountain, finds the temple, eventually gets taken under the wing of some grandmaster/monk etc...Can that stuff actually happen?
Assuming that time isn't an issue, would they actually teach a foreigner that stuff? If so, how would one go about doing that? I tried doing a bit of reading up on it and the largest centre in China got closed down in 2001 "for political reasons"
Aside from being fascinated by eastern arts/wisdom, I really don't know much about it. I've never really been a fan of Eastern philosophy, but I think I was just too young to appreciate it at the time.
Also, I'm sure it'd make an interesting eastern vs western philosophy discussion. Medicine, lifestyle, etc.
