Guy I know was in a couple small movies and is pretty well connected. He said I should give it a shot. The classes are not cheap but I figured this is something I can try for fun on weekends and worst case scenario I'll at least get to meet some new people. He said lots of hot women take those classes. Lol

Anyone here have any experience with this?

Personally, i think they are more of a scam then anything else, but give it a go if you like.

Try doing extra work in some movies if you want to know what its all about. Once you have an agent you can start audtioning for smaller roles and you get too know the casting agents.

If you can somehow swing, try to get into actra, the actors union, every movie shoot has to have X number of actra memebers, even being extras etc..

I did some extra work years ago, my best friend always got the gravy gigs (when they dont have enough actra people on set, they upgrade regular extra's and your pay goes for $10/hour to something like $20. So i tagged along with him, great times and man, its one of the best spots to pick up girls. I wouldnt do it anymore but when your in high school or university, its awesome to meet girls.

the industry is much more about who you know then what you know.

Yeah, I'm way past High school or Uni, lol. And I'm not expecting to get Rich doing this....more as a fun hobby. How did you get the extra gigs? Through your friend? How did he get started?
Darling, no need for words coming out of your mouth...just take your shirt off, that will do ;)
Anything for you ;)

my sister is in the industry and when she went through her acting school she said she was one of the older kids there at 17.. I think the oldest was 21.

LOL, the guy I know that' does that (and still takes classes) is like mid-thirties. Where did she go to acting school? I still need to get more info.

I used to be in a drama group when I was younger and it can be quite a committment if you are doing shows.

A good alternative for older folks is to look into improv classes or groups. These offer a fun alternative to 'activng classes' that will allow you to see if it is for you.

John Robert Powers acting school I think, it's in Toronto. It was more of a way to get her foot in the door after highschool then anything.

I used the same agent that my buddy did, i have no idea how he found out about it, but I think that he was buddies with the agent because he only went on set when he was replacing an actra person so he got paid pretty good.

Check online-facebook etc.. for good agents, they charge $100-200 and take a cut of your pay- something like 10% if i remeber correctly.

I only went along with him but it was great to pick up chicks, so many idiots there doing extra work though, all thinking there going to be the next tom cruise lol. None the less, it was a cool experience, got to meet quite a few stars and got invented to some pretty happening artsy parties (even more hot girls). Its good to do when your in school because the shoots are usually 1 day long but 12-18 hours, some shoots go 2-3 days. Easy to skip off a class or two if you get called in to work, not really worth skipping work for it though.

I lie a lot. Try that.

Also, actresses er excuse me, female actors tend to be a bit flaky and "into their careers". You'll find they like to talk about themselves a looooooooooot.

Not true, not all of them anyways I have a friend that's been in many tv shows as extra and is starting to get small roles, she hardly talks about her self.

I concede.

It is also not true that I lie a lot.

Just being silly.

Yeah, makes sense....might be hard to schedule having a "real" job.

And I'm not really interested in dong hardcore theater. I'd be happy just being "thug 2" in an action movie or tv series here and there and have some semi big name actor kick my *** or shoot me in the head for lulz.

Doing work as an extra is a great way to see how movies get made and get paid at the same time. Being seen on television by friends and family is a bonus, especially when it's in a real movie and not as a result of you appearing on the TV news while under arrest. ;-)

As an extra you spend a lot of sitting around waiting to be called when a scene is ready to be shot, and you may or may not spend a bit of time being dressed and redressed for different scenes. Bring something to read to help fill the time between. However, you get paid for the entire shooting day (often 10 to 12 hours or more) even though you might only spend 30 minutes or an hour actually on set for shooting scenes.

I got in as a result of knowing someone in wardrobe at Sullivan Studios studio and backlot at did some work years ago on an extended 1800s period movie called Love on the Land, filmed here in Toronto at the Sullivan Studio back lot near Eglinton and Warden, the Halton Museum near Kelso, and at Upper Canada Village, and which was retitled as "Seasons of Love for release as an HBO miniseries. Peter Strauss was a real all-round quiet-spoken gentleman, Rip Torn was the unpretentious guy next door who preferred to eat with the extras and film crews, and Rachel Ward was, well, let's not go there.

Filming an 1800s period was fun, though one extra got fired on the spot when he pulled out a point-and-shoot pocket camera during a shoot. Reshoots were common enough when a jet would unexpectedly fly by or an ambulance siren suddenly appear out of nowhere. Plus shooting at Upper Canada Village was challenging. The place was still open to the public at the time, so the film crews had to be careful to ensure that some stray tourist didn't end up as a unwanted ghost in the shoot's background.

As for real formal acting, it's tough to break into it without a "in" of some sort. I've got a cousin in stage and movie acting who even appeared in a lead role in a horror movie many years ago. God awful movie, but then again, so was my cousin's acting. It really is possible to over-gothic a gothic horror movie.
