Hey everyone,

I will be going to Amsterdam in August and I was wondering if anyone has been? Good place to stay, must see attractions (besides the obvious lol)?
What's this got to do with motorcycles you ask? There's apparently some awesome mountain twisties and I would like to hear from my fellow bikers :)

Thanks!

You wanna go all the way to Amsterdam to ride twisties? lol....

I'd have a real hard time trying to find my key, let along balancing the bike and hitting the twisties.:D

There's only one reason I would go to Ams and it wouldn't be to ride. haha

Was there in 1983 with long hair, back-pack and a golf-ball size of hash I had to leave on a Church step when I left for Belgium.
Beautiful city back then. Tons of bicycles and see the Heineken factory.
Uh....there is also a Hendrix museum I believe. Uh.....be careful, parts are or were very dangerous. See if the "MILKWEIG" is still there. It is a club across from a police station that has a moat and a draw-bridge. They sell everything in there. What a time, what a time.
Have fun but be safe.

Was there last year. Streets are small and narrow, I would suggest driving or riding there.

There is a wax museum, lotsa local attractions and ofcourse the red light district. Just walk thrpugh, but be careful I heard those girls are crack heads.

Btw, watch out for guys trying to sell you stuff on the street (crack, pills, weed etc..), it's best to go inside a cafe and get it. Most of the people are pretty open about it. Just ask and they'll tell ya. Very friendly people!

Lastly, don't eat space cakes and 24hrs before your plane ride... you won't make it.

P.S. take the subway from the airport to "city center". Don't take a cab.. it's 50euros from airport to there. That's the heart of the city... just walk around from there :) Great place to walk for hrs on end, you won't be disappointed! The subway is on the honor system... you can skip paying and claim to be a dumb tourist, but I doubt it'll fly :p

to be honest, Amsterdam was a solid "meh" for me .. so many more interesting cities in Europe.

Quaint, pretty, fun for a few nights, but generally overrated.

Amsterdam is a fantastic city to visit. I've been there two times now. I love the dutch, friendly fantastic people. They are always helpful and friendly when you have questions or just want to chat with them.

There are soooo many cafes you can't just pick one - Jolly Joker, Mellow Yellow, etc etc ... They all have their audience - some are quaint, some are hardcoard, some rastafarian, some serve beer, but most don't..

The architecture is amazing because all the buildings are falling over and have extra supports in them and they are all leaning one way or the other.

Have a great time, and remember - prostitution is a morally accepted practice there, so don't be shy.... :snorting:

A few years ago, my brother went there to see the races (Moto GP in Assen) and he got me a baseball hat from the "Heineken Experience"

Apparently, the best things in his trip was the race, and the "Heineken Experience", in that order...

Stay at "hotel my home" ... not as packed as some of the other, more famous hostels, but the people who run the place are great and there's breakfast every morning!

thats sounds like my trip last year.

in general, it was nice but it didn't rank high on the list of cities I visited on the trip (Madrid>Pamplona>Amsterdam>Bilbao)

while the architecture is nice, there a lot of repetitiveness and it gets boring frankly. Alot of the streets/canals were similar which made it pretty easy to get lost. If you're into art there are some good museums, and of course there is the Heineken tour.

All in all, we were there for like 2 1/2 days and that was plenty for me.

Get a guidebook like Lonely Planet, Let's Go, or Fodors.

I take them with me on every vacation, and they've never steered me wrong.

Heineken tour
Anne Frank House
Ajax Stadium (modeled after the Sky Dome!)
Botanical Gardens in Amsterdam
The Canalhouses
Concerts in Vondle Park - saw Prodigy there - fantastic!
Rijksmuseum

Other places to see in Holland - visit Haarlem, the beaches in Scheveningen, Ammersoyen Castle and go check out some of the windmills.

Dutch people is easygoing and very friendly folk
And they like gold, too...

Really depends on what you're into. Amsterdam is a mecca for pot heads, an interesting place to visit for others.

If you're the latter, 2 day is MORE than enough. Day 1 you can wander the downtown, 'enjoy' the cafe's etc. and then party at night. Day 2, enjoy the cafe's some more, then hit up Anne Frank House, the museum's (I think there's two...Rijks and Van Gogh??). That's basically all you'll need, at least in my opinion.

Personally I found other cities to be a little more interesting, and cleaner. You'll be going in prime tourist season, so book your stuff early. I went once in late October and once in July. July sucked compared to October because it was SO packed.

One of my friend visited there last month. But he was not satisfied.
I don't suggest you for any hostel there. Try some apartment for a little while.
