Anyone ever taken singing lessons?

I've always wanted to learn how to sing, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money. I know that anyone can be vocally trained (read: anyone can learn to hit the notes), but that doesn't necessarily mean that you'll have a good voice. I'm definitely not tone-deaf + I've been immersed in music since I was young, so I don't think I'd be too bad with some vocal training...I just want to know if I should even bother.

Do you guys know anyone who wasn't naturally talented, took lessons, and got pretty good at singing?

Haha...if I could have 3 wishes, being able to sing has always been one of them.

And so this thread isn't a complete waste, let's post covers that do the original song justice or do it even better:

Better:

Does it justice, but I haven't heard anyone yet who can top the original:

Aren't you filipino? Magic Mic dood....seriously.

When it comes to singing, either you have it or you don't.
It's not like playing a sport where practice makes perfect.

Btw... Why do 99% of Filipinos have karaoke machines?...
My girlfriend pointed it out to me once and almost every Filipino I asked has one.
What's up with that?

Do you play the piano? Are you going to practice?
One singing instructor I knew used to find it a waste to teach people who took singing, because their family was too cheap to buy a piano.

You could give me 10 years of voice training, modulating my monotone, and I still wouldn't sound good.

Don't become a tool.
I don't get it. But maybe that's because I'm already a tool :o

The cultural explanation is that it's a cheap source of entertainment that originates back home. A good friday night there (for a lot of poor folk) is heading to a local bar, getting trashed, and trying to sing while trashed. It's much cheaper than clubbing. Basically, they carried it off the boat with them :p. My parents have some Kareoke machine with like 9000 songs. hahaha

But I've also noticed that almost every single Filipino-white chick that I know can sing. If anyone has a good explanation, I'd like to hear it.

I do have a piano and I would definitely practice. But out of curiosity, was the piano for practicing tones and pitches, or was it just to learn to sing to music?

Just like 99% of white ppl have a coffee machine in their home

I have a friend that does private lessons. She was in the original cast of Phantom of the Opera. If you're interested pm me.

It's a national past-time in the Philippines. They have no-holds-barred matches where people sing to the death. It's serious business there. True story.

Lol I'm Filipino and yes we have a karaoke machine. None of us use it but come a house party then all hell breaks loose if we don't take it out.

You either have the vocal structures (physiology of your upper airway) to sound good or you don't.
Not everyone can sing. Based on how your body is, your understanding of things like pitch and tone and having the ear for it.

I know people that can just naturally sing and I know some that paid for lessons and still suck... Only now they think they are good and subject the world to it lol.

With this whole "the higher and louder I can sing the more talent I have" is BS. People don't try to find their own natural flow and attempt to be what they aren't. Some people are a Johnny cash and some people are a Mariah Carey.
A teacher will help you find your natural range and then show you techniques to extend it. Teach you how to breath properly, how to vibrato and focus on tone which is something a lot of people don't seem to understand.

That's not true. It's not you are born with it or you're not. There's a lot of technique to singing, and a lot of developing your 'voice', but also your diaphragm and control of your throat muscles, etc.

Anyone can be taught to be on-key, to use vibrato, etc. etc. You can change your voice to a certain extent, but yes you will never be able to duplicate someone else's voice.

I've been contemplating singing lessons for a while now too, though I've had a friend coach me for a little bit and it definitely improved my singing a lot (teaching me to use my diaphragm and use natural vibrato).

Im curious about this as well! My 10 year old loves singing, and even his teachers have come up to us and mentioned that we should put him in some sort of professional training cuz he really is passionate about it and is good.
I had the same questions though... Like do they really help or should I enroll him in piano lessons first to get the while music thing down first.
Those type of lessons can be very expensive so I wanna make sure I put him in the right thing!

If you want to do something that isn't destructive and you can afford it the answer is DO IT. Who cares whether you're the next "Idol" or whatever. If you take some quality lessons from a good and honest teacher you will find out if you're a shower singer, choir singer, solo act or you totally suck.

Some day you will have a 98 year old voice in a 98 year old body. Then it's too late.

I think the hard part is to find the right teacher that will try to find the best options and let you down gently if you do suck.
