Any Yamaha FJ 09 owners?

If so, is the bike a good tourer? How is the wind protection at highway speeds? Worth the $$?

Anything else you can tell me about the bike is much appreciated, if there are any owners here to begin with. :)

Seeing as the FJ09 was only released this year, you aren't going to find anyone with much experience with the bike aside from what they've learned from say April until now. The reviews look good. Good luggage, comfort, power.

I'll have to take one for a test ride, it seems like a lot of bike for the price. I actually saw that thread you are talking about Starship right after I created this one. Seems like so far most are happy with theirs.

If the suspension is better then fz09 it's a deal. That is a stellar motor Yamaha made. I'm enjoying my FZ but I would have paid an extra $1,500 if the suspension was better.

I just test rode this bike today. It's comfortable and offers enough wind protection for me (keep in mind I'm coming from an FZ8 with no wind screen).
I was really impressed with the power in A mode, the throttle response is instant. It's very easy to throw the bike into a lean for a corner and over all the riding experience was very positive.

Hey bud,

Crazy timing. I just rode the FZ09, FJ09 and the Tenere on the Canada Yamaha test rides today.

Coles notes.

The FZ09 is a couch suspension wise and with light weight and power is a hooligan giggle ride. Lot's of fun. Holy snatchy A mode (sport) FI. Run it in standard.

The FJ09 is a great ride. Surprisingly it is a lot different than the FZ09. The suspension is better sorted, and more firm like bikes I'm used to. The throttle tune is also more neutral than the FZ09. Thought it is still twitchy in the sport A mode,... go standard mode in the city and it works well. The bike does the job, can be very fast, but instead of FZ09 type accidental wheelies, consider it more intentional wheelies in that capacity. The bike has lots of power, but likes some rev's. I rode in 2nd gear to 60 mph for example. It can do that, and do it well. And the FJ had much less buzzy bars than the FZ at everywhere, including 100 - 120 kph.

I liked the seat and it is adjustable. The seating position is more comfortable as well. All this adds up to a more neutral ride. Wind protection was far superior to the FZ09 (not surprising), but not perfect either. In my ride, visor down on a ff helmet was notably preferred to open visor, let alone an open face helmet (at least with the stock wind screen). And FWIW, the FJ09 looks so much better in person than the magazine pictures. It is beautiful, with attention to many details.

My only advice would be to also ride the Tenere. That bike was the sleeper of the test ride. It has tons of power and character. It has better low end power than the FJ, though the FJ has better top end power if that matters. It had notably more oomph from 3-5k rpm, then at 7k rpm + the FJ09 came into its own. I'd characterize it as the Tenere pulls hard instantly (with still a relatively high rpm ceiling), while the FJ09 pulls slower with a more sport bike rush at mid-high rpm and with a high rpm ceiling. The Tenere had over-the-top power for an adventure tourer, great wind protection, great character, a total surprise. It has a big intake honk on large throttle, which combined with the low end torque of a parallel twin makes it very responsive... plus that sound :). I'd call it a hooligan adventure tourer bike, and it had more character than the FJ09.

IMO, the FZ09 and FJ09 are two of the best bang for buck bikes out there. Definitely for touring the FJ09 is a big step up from the FZ09, at a great price.

I'm hopefully buying a new bike next year and the FJ is on the short list for me. On paper, it's exactly what I want. Comfortable for long rides but still light and nimble. In person though it just doesn't quite do it for me. I haven't ridden one or anything but the styling is just kind of...meh... In the words of James May, it doesn't give me "the fizz" I guess. Maybe riding one will change my outlook though.

I'm seriously considering this bike so I went in to see how much it would cost. They wanted my 2013 GSXR600 (which is in like-new condition) plus $5700 (after tax).

Excellent replies, thank you Mike and kwt.

Tenere looks like a more capable bike, but it's also priced quite a big higher and it's also (as far as I know) a bit taller too, and when you are a shorter guy, that comes into play and decision making.

That would be quite a big difference in bike style (supersport vs adventure), as far as ergos and over all riding position difference goes. You should definitely test ride it.

Yup, I test rode it. Seems like a bike you could ride all day without getting too sore. The torque is awesome, I got back on my gsxr right after and was really missing it. I wouldn't call the FJ-09 an adventure bike though. I haven't ridden many adv bikes but I rode the vstrom and nc700x and cb500x, and the FJ-09 definitely felt a lot sportier than any of them. It's pretty much just a naked sport bike with a slightly adv-ish look.

Check out the Super Tenere ES.... Much better bike for ADV touring/riding. The FJ is the poor man's Super T. A positive note about the FJ is that it's got the FZ 09's lovely 3 cyl monster between your legs.

isn't the Super Tenere ES WAY more expensive? Thought it's about the same price as the KTM 1190 Adventure... OP check out KTM 1190 :D

If they fixed the suspension, and fuel mapping I can see the attraction to the FJ-09.

FJ09 has no off-road capability, with its minimal ground clearance and street suspension travel. It is a comfortable and fast sports touring bike. Great for taller riders and should be compared to like the current of cross-over SUV vehicles that look like they can go off-road but never do.

If anything it is an affordable Tiger or with a big stretch Multistrada option.

They did fix the suspension and the fuel mapping is better, but A mode (sport) is not perfect yet. Doesn't really matter though as std mode works great and I'd use that for lower speed around town.

And yes the Tenere is way more expensive, so it doesn't have great value that the FJ-09 does.

For the price the FJ-09 is exceptional. It will be a big seller, like the FZ-09

And as it turns out, my friend who I haggled into coming to the test ride as well (and he rode the same bikes) just went to the same dealer today and bought the red FJ-09. It is being uncrated and PDI'd for pickup tomorrow. I'm not the only one who really liked the bike! :D. Lucky guy.

At least I'll be able to get some more miles on it now. :)

I've always wanted the KTM Adventure since they had the 990... The 1190 is a wonderful bike.... But for those who aren't tall enough... The Super T or the Beamer GS1200 are the way to go. The GS is the best ADV bike, but for the price and the reliability of a Jap bike.... The Super T competes with the KTM and Beamer. Of course the KTM is better off road than all of the rest, but the Yammy is more than capable. The only PITA is the fact that you can't turn ABS off, for off road riding.... It's a big hassle. I am probably buying a Super Tenere after getting some time with the KTM 690, (1190 adventure was way too tall....) and the FZ-09/FJ-09 (Thanks again Chasem for letting me take your FZ for a whiz around to get a great feel for it) and a few other sport bikes. I need something to keep my R6 in the garage for every day riding, Sunday Funday is when she will get to come out and play.

The FJ is wicked on the street, suspension issue was fixed. Throttle in A mode is just fine if you're used to riding really twitchy SS bikes.. My R6 was way way way worse than last year's FZ, which is way worse than the FJ... I thought the FZ throttle I'm A mode was great, the FJ is even better for those who don't like super snappy throttles.

The FJ-09 will be a second bike in the garage for my friend. The start of a stable.

I love the Tenere, he liked it but wasn't as enamoured as I was (with the significant added price). I did mention that the the FJ-09 has a lot of merit as a great bike to try out touring at a very attractive price-point. It remains to be seen if he gets into bike touring. If one gets serious into the touring scene, upgrading to a Tenere is an easy and simple option, if desired. It makes sense and he agreed. No need to start at the top-end options.

And if getting serious BMW is also an interesting option like the Tenere.

One ride leader owned the Tenere and has done lots of big mile tours. I asked about taking the FJ-09 on a road trip to Alaska. He said it would be fine up to Fairbanks. Beyond that, a Tenere would be needed for its off-road ability (including higher ground clearance and skid plate, etc.). I'd be more than happy with the Alaska trip to Fairbanks so I see much merit in the FJ-09 ability.

Lots of love for the KTM out there. The dealer network is not as big as I'd prefer though.

One thing I noted to my friend is buying the Yamaha means the switch gear is similar to the other Japanese bikes we own. It's annoying to have notably different switch gear when owning multiple bikes.

The Africa Twin will likely be the best option in the ADV segment, hoping Honda does not price it too high. Right around $12-14k would be the sweet spot :)
