Any Android gurus want to take a stab at my phone problem?

So I have a factory unlocked international Note 2 (GT-N7100). Supposedly from Spain originally. Anyway, my in call audio hasn't worked for a while. I noticed it a month ago but I use a different phone for almost all of my calling and the rest I use VOIP apps for so it may have been that way for over a year. I basically use it as a tablet with the occasional VOIP call but I'd like to have the phone app working properly.

At some point I flashed a Samsung official ROM from South Africa (if I remember correctly) as they had a newer Android version than mine and it wasn't saying an update was available. Everything worked great except maybe voice calls. I have no idea if those worked before I discovered the problem recently.

Last week I tried flashing a custom ROM hoping it would fix the problem. During this process I wiped all the partitions. In the end that ROM (Ditto Note 4 if you're curious) wouldn't get past the Samsung boot screen so I gave up and reflashed the latest unbranded stock ROM for France.

Problem still remains.

I tried poking around in the hidden diagnostic menus (where you can enable and disable different frequency bands and stuff like that) and found one for Audio but clicking on it does nothing.

I thought maybe I could modify something through QPST but that tool only works for Qualcomm chipsets and this thing has a Samsung Exynos chipset so QPST wouldn't talk to it. I can't find anything similar for the Samsung chipsets.

I read that that Audio menu was blocked out by Samsung on some newer radio firmwares so I downloaded the original ROM from 2012, extracted the modem firmware and flashed it. Menu still won't work so I went back to the latest. Still no audio.

I don't think it's a hardware issue because the mic and all speakers work great on VOIP apps. It's just when I call there is no audio in or out of my phone. Doesn't matter if I'm using the headset, speakerphone, or an external set of headphones (with mic). If I press keys I can hear the DTMF tones on the other line but no other audio. Even from the diagnostic tests when I run the Receiver audio test I do hear the tone.

I did at one point have the thing rooted and I think tried swapping the phone app for a different one because the dialer codes to access those hidden menus weren't working but I assume that should've all been cleared up when I did the wipes and reflashes. I have since found out what the new codes are to access the same menus.

Any ideas? Or if you can explain why it could still be hardware even though the hardware works for all other purposes, I'd appreciate it.

Maybe try the Cyanogen forum? Lots of tinkerers over there. Something funky might have happened with the baseband software, which usually isn't part of the ROM you would flash to the phone

Stock ROMs come with the baseband (modem) firmware, which is what I've been trying lately. I verified by checking that the baseband version was changing between flashes. But you are correct that custom ROMs often do not come with new bootloader or baseband.

Interestingly, when I flashed that old modem firmware the phone was not able to connect to any mobile networks even though it can detect them. I presumed this was a mismatch between the kernel/OSversion/baseband so I flashed the entire old stock firmware (Android 4.1.1). I tried one for France and one for Greece (the Greece one actually said EUR) and neither could connect. Reflashing the newer France one got the phone reconnected to the network but still no call audio.

I will try the Cyanogen forum, though. Thanks for the suggestion.

Holy **** I fixed it!

I have given up on Googling as solution because I've been doing that on and off for months and wasting many many hours. I did another search today and found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/help/sound-speeh-calls-t2964128

Post #39:
Settings
Apps
Scroll right to All
Scroll down to Google Play Services
Tap Disable
Repeat for Google Services Framework.

Did that and made a call and instant call audio!

But now all my Google apps don't work.

Google is not on their game lately. A whole bunch of us at work had HTC Desire 601 phones that would stay "awake" all the time with the screen off, killing the battery in hours. When you checked the battery usage it is always Google Play Services eating all the battery. We never found a solution.

Congratulations, you now have a Blackberry LOL!
Actually I have Google apps (Android GMail app, Google Play, etc) running fine on my BB Leap.

At least I know where the problem lies and it gives me a start to fix it. It also proves it's not a hardware issue.

Stopped working again. Google Play Services fix stopped working. Pulled it apart and reseated the connector and it was working. Next day didn't work. I quit. Guess I can't sell it or anything. Still does most of what I need it for but now I'm truly wasting money on the voice plan portion of my plan but oh well. Not like I was using it before, anyway.

Not filling me with confidence here...I was planning on getting the Note 4 as my S4 is slowing down but still haven't bothered replacing it.

I recently got the S4, not sure what all the fuss was about Android. I think my Windows phone was better in many ways. Sure wasn't as data hungry. Only switched because the company now uses Google (what is it? Enterprise? ).

I just switched to Android from Apple because it was a free phone given to me so I thought 'meh, nothing to lose' ...

Don't really see the big deal about it honestly....sure you can customize the screens....oooooo....mind you I think I moved a total of 10 apps into different spots...customization FTW!

Well you have to remember this is a 3 year old phone but yeah, some Androids have odd issues that are next to impossible to sort out.

We had a bunch of HTC Desire 601s at work and every one of them had a bug where they would stay awake all the time. Some guys sent them in for repair but the new phones would have the same problem. It was some kind of big with Google Play Services. We never found a solution. Mine was through Bell and came with an older version of Android and didn't have the bug until it was a bit older and some update got pushed to it and then I got the same problem. The guys on Rogers had the bug right away.

Depends what you do with your phone. Mine basically replaces a laptop. From what I've seen of Apple that's a little harder to do on their devices but maybe I just haven't used one enough.

My main motivation for the Note series from Samsung is that pen...it's a great feature and I wish more phones had it. The Note is too big for my taste...but that pen is damn handy for note taking.

I will admit that entering contests is much easier on the droid. I will be using the laptop for maybe the 2nd time today since I got the phone.
I know many people like one device that does everything, but I'm okay with my music on one, emails and apps on another, etc.

As a bit of a thread hijack, the netbook I gave to my son (which was 2nd hand) is just not cutting it. He's been asking about a desktop. His only real concerns are: homework (google drive / Google apps), MineCraft and Skype. He is also doing some video editing for his YouTube channel. Anyone have something kicking around, or can build one for me at a reasonable cost?

I have some desktops available but they're not very high spec'd. P4 2.8 ghz. There's one Core 2 machine that's a bit better. I've been giving them away to poor people but giving things away is harder than you think so I've got 3 left. All run Win 7 fine.

Have you tried just using a stylus on other devices? They might work ok. The s-pen is more precise, I think. Interestingly there are two different sensors for the touchscreen vs the pen. If I go into diagnostic testing there is a touchscreen test and the pen does not work on that test. Then there is a "wacom" test that the touchscreen does not work for but the pen does. The pen also does not work on other devices.

One thing that's (very minorly) annoying is the menu and back softkeys don't work with the pen so if you are doing a lot with the pen and then need one of those buttons you need to remember to use your finger instead. That has probably changed on the newer versions, though, as I don't think they have separate softkeys anymore (the softkeys on the Note2 are below the screen, not part of it). I guess the wacom sensor doesn't extend that low.

Try this. http://www.adonit.net/jot/pro/ this is what I use, it's great. Touch screen stylus and pen, but with the clear disc it's like using a fine point pen.

I've seen this before in my search but never gave it a shot. Wasn't sure if it works as advertised. Thanks SJ.

unL33T - yes I've used different stylus but they all have ****** results when trying to write something. Haven't found anything (until the Adonit posted above) to allow me to clearly type without making it look like complete chicken scratch.

Definitely works as advertised. I've been using it for over a year. Best thing it purchase it at Staples, try it and if you don't like it return it. That's what I did but i didn't return it.
