Hey folks, looking for an inexpensive GPS. Any thoughts on a used garmin 2720 vs a used quest II? Anything else out there sub $200? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a smart phone? You could probably mount it

Best Buy, CTC always has older inventory on sale in the $100-129 range. You get a better than used device (battery life?), warranty and possibly more water resistant than your phone.

I've never used a Quest, but I do love my 2720. I'm currently on my third.

Update it to current maps and you have a gps that's every bit as capable as the current Zumo line.

I'm runnin the Garmin 2595LMT in the Ram mount Steering Stem mount, powered by the waterproof USB port from Princess Auto. Works sweeeeeet.

I have a Quest 2, it mainly sits collecting dust. Not really a great road gps in my opinion, screen is incredibly small and recalculating takes ages. When I used to use it (2 months, then switched to Zumo), I would have to pull over if I made a wrong turn, just to let it recalculate, way to slow.

If you can find a Nuvi 550, they are waterproof, bigger touch screen, much more motorcycle friendly.

I have a Garmin Zumo 550 listed FS in Parts & accessories. A little more than what u want to pay, but its water proof and M/C friendly.

I still use the original Quest. It's the same size as the Quest II, but it calculates faster because it doesn't have all of the maps preloaded. It's definitely showing its age, but the battery still lasts all day and the screen is easily read in the sunlight. I was going to switch to using my smartphone, but I just can't see the smartphone screen in direct sunlight.

If I were to buy a new basic GPS today I'd just get any cheap new Nuvi and stick it in the map pocket of my tankbag.

Wow, so it looks like Garmin discontinued the Nuvi 550? That used to be the go-to motorcycle GPS. Maybe it was eating into their Zumo sales because it was 1/2 the price!

OP I would recommend looking on eBay for one. They're waterproof! That + a RAM Mount is a perfect GPS setup for riding.

Probably was. For simple, waterproof gps it was a great device. Put them on my dad's and uncles Harleys, and even with all the shaking those things do when standing still, they still work perfectly.

Thanks everyone. Leaning towards 2720 for $150 with all updates, lifetime maps, and unlock code, but can also go with Nuvi 550 for $200. Coin toss I think.

For what it's worth, I hate the newer style Garmin UI. I haven't used a Nuvi in a while, but I remember not being able to have a constant on compass as well as detour by a specific road. Could be really wrong on this one, but I don't remember being able to add multiple points in a route as well. All things the old 2720 does.

The Nuvi is definitely limited in its features, but its a budget motorcycle gps. It gets you from A to B with few bells and whistles. All those other features, well you have to pay for them, and for me are worth it, but not everyone needs it.

Never heard of the detour by specific road function, do not think my Zumo 660 has that option, but everything else it does.

I love my 2720. Going on 5 yrs now... I wish I had gotten a 2820 just for the added MP3 feature though.
It even has a few features that I use, that new Zumo's don't anymore.
Tough and waterproof. One prob is no battery....so no easy way to remove it at a lunch stop on a tour to check or modify routes etc.

The detour by road function is great. Instead of the silly detour by 5km/10km/15km option the newer models have, you can pick specific roads that you want the gps to avoid. Great when it wants to get you onto the interstate but you just want to dawdle on the sideroads.

Had a 660 for a week, sold it and bought another 2720. There wasn't one thing on the 660 that I felt was a real improvement over the 2720. The big clear display and thin profile are nice, but as far as the gps itself goes, it has nothing over a 2720.

garmin montana has a N pointing in direction at all times.

detouring by specific road, not specifically but ... by recent update you can for sure add/modify points in a route.

**okay, after checking advrider, you can only add ONE point on route (if you are detouring from main route to say a gas station). I'm pretty sure if you want to detour further, you have to edit the route from a different menu. oh well. That detour menu looks sweet.
