Another "****** at my ins co" thread

So I'm with "The Personal Insurance" and have a company discount/rate with them. I went with them when I left State Farm after getting my VFR750 and they kept hiking my premiums.

Anyways, I have my car, bike and House with them. I live in Shelburne. have a Full GM license.

I was excited for my renewal this year. I have turned 30. I have 1 less ticket on my record, and the last one gets wiped out 2 weeks after my renewal date. I figured since I ride a Sport touring bike in a town in the middle of nowhere they'll dump my premiums.

So I get the renewal and I open it. Flip to the payments page and it has gone down 1 dollar. A dollar!

I am 30, just had another claim free year which brings my total up to ummm let me count...oh yeah... 30 years claim free. I have 1 minor conviction gone and the last minor conviction expires 2 weeks after the renewal and I get a buck for my loyalty and good driving?!

So I guess I gotta go Insurance shopping again!! Every 3 years I'm switching insurance companies because no one company decides to reward me for good driving, or age, or getting a higher class license or anything really. Though I'm sure the first claim I submit they'll be sure to "reward" me right up the ***!

*sigh* So. How are people who are with Ridersplus like them? The online quote put me around $1100/year. (I'm paying $1650/year now)

I know what you mean, I opened mine up and it's $10 more expensive than last year's.
If I bring this up with the insurance company I get a typical: rates are going up in your area/season/brand explanation..

I have been with Ridersplus for a few years now and I am pleased. I do comparison shop yearly for giggles. They have always been the most competitive for me, plus they at least call every year before the policy renewal date to see if I have all the coverage I need. Sure they are trying to sell more insurance, but at least I get a call from them and we can discuss what I have. It's more service then I get from any other insurance company I deal with.

Try TD Insurance. My insurance renewal dropped $50 this year. My driving record, bike and policy remained the same. 1 st time I'm not complaining about a renewal.....

Wow! $200 less than what I currently pay using Ridersplus! Thanks for the heads up.

I left Riders Plus last year and went with TD as they were about $75 less at the time. I also live in the middle of nowhere, ride a sport touring bike, have zero claims and over 40 years of unbroken insurance on a motorcycle. My record is spotless, no tickets or claims in over 10 years, but my renewal still came in about $80 up from last year. At $830 it is quite a bit less than your quote; however, I don't have collision coverage on my bike and am a wee bit older than you as well. I have checked around and so far the renewal I received is the best price I can find. My suggestion is to go where the best price is offered and check around every year.

I'm not familiar with The Personal's rating, but it's possible that they forgive the first two minor convictions, in which case you would be nearly the same risk profile as you were last year. It's also possible that you lost a 5% or 10% surcharge, but also gained an overall rate increase (so the net effect is zero). Shopping around is always smart.

Thanks all. yeah I'll try TD as well.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention my quotes are for Liability and Theft/fire only. No collision.

Hey Viffer, is it true that Motorcycle insurance now (or always did but I never knew) has a lower minimum Liability amount? I heard it can be as low as $200,000?

Wait - you're 30, riding a VFR750, and are paying $1650 for insurance?

Thanks all. yeah I'll try TD as well.

The savings on cutting your liability is usually in the ballpark of a McDonald's value meal - you will normally have to beg your broker to do it.

I know, right?!

bah. There goes that idea.

Thanks TK. When you gonna get another V-Four?

Well... I might be abandoning the Ninja 1000 in the spring if anybody bites on it. Because, of course, insurance going up when I expected it to go down. :P Who knows where I go after that, heh. I'm not gonna lie though, I'm still intimidated by the idea of doing maintenance on a V-4. Have you ever done a valve check on your current bike?

Valve Check?! For everyting I've read on all the forums, any of the VFR's from 1990 to 2001 get their valaves checked at 50,000kms and they are all within spec.

On of the reasons I love the VFR is the lack of maintenance.

....and that V-Four Growl! (and don't forget the Gear Driven Cams :agave:)

I used to think of motorcycle accidents as being either very minor and covered by minimal insurance or major but I would be dead so who cares. However if you look at the cost of damages should you hit a pedestrian or another biker the minimum coverage may not cover it.

If you travel to the USA the situation is even worse. Topping up liabilities is a relative bargain IMO.

Tell me about it!
My old agent resigned from statefarm, i had a new agent, he charged me for 2 cars when i switched to my winter car. I was very unhappy. I end up calling corporate & switched to another agent. Cant believe they treat me like that after 8yrs
