Angry now: what are my options. (help)

Currently live in a free hold row town house. Used to absolutely love my neighbors - and loved by them as well. Until new ppl moved in!

Everyone kept the noise down - everyone was happy - until these new ppl moved in. Construction noise and now music at 1am...I've told them nicely that it's not acceptable...still keeps going on.

What can I do? I'm keeping a log of all the noises etc...but this is driving me mental and angers me.

haha wow I'm with you on this.... check your local by-laws, theres very specific wording about acceptable noise levels and time periods...

BEFORE you call the police or by-law on them and start a war, do your homework, try to amicably come to a resolution with your neighbours... show them the by-laws if possible.... If they are hostile or completely unreasonable, then get the authorities involved. Or, fight fire with fire. Right or wrong, having neighbours that you're constantly in conflict with is one of the worst scenarios you can have at home.

Construction cannot go on after 7PM....

I'm keeping a log of the noise....apparently I need a 14 day log for the city to do something about it, which is almost done now.

Its very angering - lack of a better work - I've had to go through a major life style change and majority of my income / time goes towards my home....

They seemed resonable when I asked them nicely before about the noise level, but the next day - right back up. Now im trying to sleep and I can't....there is constant noise in the background......

Is it bass or just volume level?

Can you rearrange your room so that your bed is opposite to the shared wall? Put in ear plugs? Ring their doorbell until someone answers and plead your case. A LOT of the time, people who come from detached homes and move into semi/towns, are just oblivious and ignorant to the fact that sound carries.

Its bass and treble now....it depends on what is playing.

I would have to re-arrange my entire house....things will look plain silly if I do.

The home owner isn't around, its his uncle who is living here and 'helping' him renovate....whos making all the noise.

I did ring his door bell - told him, this is the second time im asking him to turn it down...he said "...ok dude I will..." ; hes a washed up 50+ year old harley look guy who doesnt have a job ....just his dog with him.

I came from a detached house....never had to deal with these issues....never thought noise issue would be such a huge ordeal!

What about the neighbours on the other side(s)? Get their support too if possible so that he can't just dismiss you as a difficult neighbour. But keep it civil as long until all avenues are exhausted. Then kill his dog.

Pound on the wall when noisy.

If not run ur compressor @ 4am. Program your radio when he's sleeping

Sent from my phone using my paws

Escalate the situation to the point that there can be no good outcome for anyone.

Welcome to the due process of law. The worst part is that you have good neighbours as well so loud piping your bike at 3:00 AM creates more enemies. There are no easy answers. My daughter lost days of work because of a AH that deliberately blocked a common driveway and made a general nuisance of himself. When he realized she wasn't going to fold up and quit he moved. The new neighbours are fantastic.
It is a pain but until you can get a court order specifically limiting his actions (Don't even know if that is possible) it is up to you to wear the guy down. Retaliation only weakens your position if it goes to court.

If you can get a court order them it's him versus the court, not you.

Does he have a building permit for the work? Does the reno meet the corporate bylaws or covenents? Is the place zoned for the dozen or two tenents he plans to rent to?

Are you still in Brampton?

Brampton City Council passed the bylaw to curb persistent and recurring noise that lasts longer than ten days, usually from a machine or other mechanical equipment. The bylaw specifically prohibits noises such as:

  • A dog barking daily and excessively
  • Someone playing a loud stereo or musical equipment regularly.
  • Someone operating construction equipment daily before 7 a.m. and after 11 p.m.

Boom. I'd start there.

Also check with the other neighbour. Strength in numbers for your case.

I had a similar situation once with some jamaican dudes at my last house in toronto playing loud reggae till all hours of the night it drove me absolutely nuts so one saturday night after they had jammed all night long I waited till 8am after they all crashed out and got my home stereo with 5 foot tower speakers and 500 watts of power put it on the back patio facing their house and give them a dose of the ACDC's hells bells tune over and over for 3-4 hours straight needless to say they got the message and things calmed down after.Fight fire with fire

I like this better than my violent alternative.

Except if his neighbour is a biker type dude then he might have to blast the soundtrack from The Sound of Music.
