Angry Hornet = nearly crashed

I hate it when this happens...

Was enjoying the nice weather a couple of hours ago and had my jacket partially unzipped. A hornet (why does it always have to be hornets...) collided with me and said (and now very very angry) hornet ended up inside my jacket.

I saw it hit me and thought to myself...I wonder what kind of bug that was? The answer came a few seconds later. If you passed a guy frantically stripping down near the corner of Thickson and Victoria in Whitby this morning that would have been me. I'm lucky no one was behind me when I hit the brakes, a rear-ender would have made things much worse.

I finally killed the little bugger but not before he stung me eight times, three on my shoulder and the rest down my back. The last couple weren't as painful...I think he was getting tired. Waiting for hornets to get tired of stinging you is never a good idea...

The good news is I didn't drop the bike, though did manage to step on my sunglasses while doing the contortions trying to reach behind my back to kill it.

It seems every season I get stung at least once but today was the worst by far.

Cheers,
Daryl
(waiting for the swelling to go down...)

Imilar thing happened to me with a wasp (which I am alergic to & carry an epipen for). I noticed it right away and stopped immediately...never got my gear off quicker in my life. I was lucky not to get stung

Hate those buggers!

I was riding visor up (looking for an address) last year and had a bee get stuck between my helmet and the side of my face right beside my left eye. I could feel it moving as I was trying to flick it out with riding gloves on. I have no idea how I didn't get stung.....Must have been too tight for the bee to get to me but I can tell you that it was a horrible experience.

Wow, 8 times is a lot!!! I had a wasp stinging me twice before I killed it. And yeah, must look really funny seeing a biker stripping very quickly on the side of the road :)

ow.....even the description makes me twitch.....damn 8 times - lucky you are not susceptible

about 2 years ago I had a wasp find a safe hiding spot in my helmet, my first crash in a bike. Life just hasn't been the same since :(

A friend of mine who I ride with keeps bees. One day we were doing some maintenance on our bikes a bee was bugging me so I hit it with some tool I had in my hand SPLAT DEAD!. I guess one of the other bees saw this cause next thing I know I do hear a trumpet playing. I go outside just in time to see a swarm of bees that hard formed in the shape of a giant trumpet in the sky I hardly got done saying “wtf” when the mass on angry vengeful bees changes shape to form a giant Hammer. I ran but could not keep away the hammer shaped mass of stingy buzzing bees chased me.

Moral of the story is bees are scary

Some version of this has happened to me several times. When I went for my M test I had a fat lip because something decided to fly into my mouth while riding and sting me. It was the straw that broke the camels back about getting a full faced helmet. Also, just least week I had a wasp crawling around on the inside of my visor. He got out ok though. I've had them up my jacket as well. Not pleasant. At least you handled it well.

Had the same thing happen to me at 3:00am, on the way home from a girlfriend's place. At 80 Kmh all that I could do was pound at my stomach, while the damned thing stung me about a half dozen times. It finally stopped and I thought that I had gotten it but when I got home and took off my shirt, the bugger flew out and up to the light.

Was at MX camp last week, having a break while the other group was doing laps. Suddenly guy comes flying in off the track, drops the bike before he even stops and starts dancing and stripping. He got nailed at least 8 times on his back under his chest protector. Pretty hard not to laugh!

When I was demoing a Spyder in May, a wasp ended up in my helmet (visor down). Calmly got the visor up and it got sucked out.

I have done similar, travelling at 100+ in the states, had a bee, or hornet fly right up my sleeve. Was beating my elbow up pretty good trying to squash him, and did before he could bite/sting me. Its a strange sensation to be moving along on a bike and feel a bee/hornet crawling around your arm. Not pleasant at all.

Back in the 7th grade I was on my bicycle, and some kids had been throwing rocks at a beehive.. I rode under it, and they all swarmed me. Dropped the bike eventually and RAN. Had over 20 that stung me.. doc told me from that day that I had to go to a hospital if I was ever stung again. Luckily I never have been since, but I don't even have an epi pen so im assuming its not too bad.

This seems to be one of those rights of passage for riders. happened to me many years ago, cruising down the road, visor up and wham! the little bugger gets stuck right at my temple. so what do I do? both hands off the bars and I'm struggling with the strap while the bike is slowing down and beginning to wobble. I get the bike stopped, stand down and rip the lid off and through it on the ground..But alas, I was too late, he got me..burned like hell!
I can chuckle about it now , and sometimes I wonder what the other drivers on the road must have thought to themselves as they watched some crazy guy trying to rip his lid off while decelerating with no hands...I would imagine they probably had a chuckle too ...and likely thought "glad it wasn't me"!

I had the same thing happen but it stung me as I tried to ease my helmet off.

That's funny!

That is a tough bug. Was it wearing a superhero outfit?

I got hit in the chest with something last year and wondered what the hell it could be. I was wearing a vented leather jacket. Turned out a hornet hit me and got it's stinger through the vent hole and right in my man-boob. Ouch.
