I am not a fan, they frequently have some 'voice actors' doing the lines, not the actual author itself, and that bugs me
I would find a good podcast or two for your wife, I imagine she would like it more, I certainly prefer them.
This is status quo with ALL audiobooks, and if you've ever heard some authors speak versus what they write, you'd understand why. A good narrator can hands down make the book, and once you listen to enough of them you'll learn the good ones from the bad ones, and have your favorites.
I'm a big Audible user. The key is to signup and let your credits build up at the monthly rate and then use them when you need them. The actual cost of outright buying a book versus using your monthly credit can be INSANE.
I have about 6 unused credits on my account right now as I tend to listen to audiobooks less (or at least slower) in the winter months but will drastically pickup the pace come riding season again when I listen to them while on big rides. I'll use the credits then.
There's alternatives to Audible out there but my experience has been lacklustre. Audible is the 900 pound gorilla at this point so all the big authors pretty much just go there. No sense in going somewhere cheaper or whatever if you can't actually find the books you're interested in reading (Er, listening to) there.
Also, every now and then you'll get an offer for extra credits for a discounted price. I always take them and stack more credits whenever possible.

why not try one of the services available from your local library instead...they're free and have a wide variety of books available...for example, Milton Public Library uses Hoopla and CL (cloud library)...hubby uses it all the time and all you need is a library card...
Toronto public library is amazing. My wife/kids may or may not have 40 books/audio books checked and another 30 on hold out at all times through TPL. Local library is ok but not in the same league.
Works very well I have a subscription and get 1 book a month.

I asked her about the library, and she doesn't like it. It's complicated, she's disabled.
Tpl uses overdrive/libby. Not sure what your local library uses. Initial setup is slightly annoying but my five year old has no problems checking out and returning books now that it is setup. There is a three month plus wait for most material though. That's why the family has such a long hold list.
TPL is so good with their selection, but I hate the waiting for the book to be finally available. Also pain in the butt to get it all setup, but once there, it's phenomenal. Listened to tons of books when I was commuting to/from work, and half the enjoyment was in having a good narrator. Best one...Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Amazing narration. But he only did the first one.
Signed up for Mississauga library, haven't downloaded a book yet...no commute.
Just get the subscription and don't worry about it you may even enjoy it.
