Alpinestar Fast lane boots not good for M1 exit course?

I am going for the M1 exit course with Learning curves this weekend. I went to Studio Cycle to look for some boots. I wanted to get the Alpinestar Fast lane boots but the guy over there told me that I can't wear them for the course.

I called learning curves and they suggested I should check with the instructor on Thursday (in the evening theory class). I thought Alpinestar Fast lane boots would have been appropriate but now I am not sure. I want to avoid waiting till Thursday and want to buy the boots earlier.

Does anyone know if Fast lane boots are not appropriate for the course?

Well they cover the ankle and that was the big mandatory thing when I did Humber.

But really man.... shoes? Buy something with real protection.

As long as it covers the ankle area, you should be okay. Even safety boots will work!

The rule is it must be leather and covering the ankle bone. For example Blundstones wouldn't work first because they are suede and not leather and second because the stretchy elastic part that covers the ankle bone.

Are they all leather? Or do they have canvas bits? I'd bring em to class and ask the instructor if you do buy em, but the fact that the sales guy said no makes me think they are not acceptable

All they really care about is whether or not it covers your ankle (and those shoes look like they do). Heck, I wore girly fashion boots that were so cheap the tread on my left shoe's sole was half gone by the end of the two days.

Safety boots will work (saw plenty of those at the course I took), though personally I don't like wearing them because they're so thick and clunky that I can't really feel anything with them. That's just my preference, so if you're comfortable in them all the power to you.

EDIT: I should add that I took the course at Humber, so their requirements may be different.

Well I am not really comfortable with the bulky safety boots. The toe area is so thick, I suspect I will not have enough feedback from the gear shifter. This is the reason I wanted to get the Fast lane.

Anyways, I think I will check out Payless shoe source today and find something that is ankle high. Will take it to the instructor on thursday. If they say no then I will return. Otherwise I will wear them.

Other than Payless shoe source, any other place I can find boots?

Just pay up and get some real motorcycle boots. If you plan to ride in the future, you'll be glad you have real boots instead of ditching the cheap/cool ones you pay for now and have to ditch. Macs Leathers on Queen downtown sometimes has a decent selection of gently used boots. Kijiji has an oceanful if you can deal with kijiji people.

I am a senior instructor at a college and I would let you wear those based on the photos I saw but I can't speak for another institution though.

You can wear those at learning curves. I just did course last weekend and someone had a pair of those

It will be up to the senior in charge of the weekend. As long as the initial criteria is there (leather, cover ankle).. it's then up to the seniors own discretion whether to allow or not. (therefore you sometimes hear of certain things allowed or not allowed depending on the weekend)

FYI - we feel those boots are sufficient to participate in the motorcycle course at: www.motorsoul.ca

I bought a pair of those timberland knockoff from Payless for like $50 , they are not steel toe but are like work boots, I took the safety course back in JULY, instructor had no issue with it and it was actually quite comfortable to wear, but again like most have complain, the bottom of the shoes were too thick, you can hardly feel the brake paddle and the gear shifter, but i got over that and pass and now searching for a good pair of motorcycle shoes.

Some rider training course won't accept them from what I've been told.

However, a friend of mine who works at a gear outfitter said you can get a letter from the store you bought from them from (or Alpinestars) to "verify" that they are safe for riding. LOL.

hahaa thats funny! A store has no authority whether a school will accept gear for their course. It's up to the school to set its policy of what is acceptable or not; then it is up to the senior in charge on-site to make the final call- keeping the schools policy in mind and using their own discretion when necessary. We dont care about what some note says from any store!!!!! Bring your gear to the classroom for the final ok if you are ever concerned whether it meets the requirements - the lead instructor for that weekend will usually always be there and you can get their approval. You should really have your gear organized by the time its classroom anyway!!! Haha

Thanks for the replies.

I did the course with Learning curves this weekend and someone was wearing the fast lanes. They had no issues with them.

I, though, did not purchase the fast lanes since I was not sure.

This is what I did too.

When the bike lands on you, you want boots, not shoes.
Don't assume it will never happen.

Who said to get safety boots? My friend went down wearing safety boots and the doctor said the steel cap was what actually broke his toes. I told him for months to get proper boots, but he didn't care, he tried telling me safety boots were better, lol.

Ouch. Yeah, last thing you want is for the steel cap getting bent and crushing your toes AND THEN GETTING STUCK THAT WAY.
