ALL Fluids need to be changed

Yes folks all fluids need to be checked and changed on a regular basis not just the engine oil.

Fork oil should be changed
Anit-Freeze should be flushed and changed
Final drive oil (If you have one)
Clutch fluid

and Yes Brake Fluid.

Someone bought this little 250 Rebel and brought it by and asked if I would fix a couple things for her, I did and thought I would give it a look over as well since it was in my garage. Needless to say I had a job cleaning the brake fluid, or what ever it had turned into after being in the bike for two decades.

Heat also breaks down the fluids so brake fluids and fork oil are subject to this and should be serviced to make the bike function properly.

Never seen break fluid get that bad. Does break fluid even get that way? Looks a lot like used hydraulic oil....

Yes, age. Remember that the brakes generate a lot of heat and that heat effects the fluid. If your brake fluid is not clear you need to change it. It's an easy job and cheap. Sure makes the brakes work better as well.

I have seen this on my FZR project. 20+ years of no one touching the fluid until I opened it up....took a while to get it cleaned out. Now I have brakes again!

Thanks for the reminder, have to change my fork oil. Everything else is up to date

How often should you do the fork oil? I just bought my 2007 R1 with 15,000km's on it, did all the fluids but not the forks.

I change it yearly. You would be surprised at how much sediment builds up over that time.

It's a very quick job.

I have seen a few people actually dump more than two bottles when replacing the brakes. Can't say that I would ever do that.

And yearly? I would have to say it depends on mileage. I did my street bike at 20,000km, track bike will be yearly.
