air pump

hi all,

looking to get an air pump for the garage to inflate tires of motorcycle and car, anyone have any recommendations?

Initially, I was thinking of something like this:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...5079P/Heavy-duty+Air+Compressor.jsp?locale=en

but then thought for a little more, something like this might be better:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25e...53&langId=-1&keyword=compressor&storeId=10051

I probably wouldn't be using it to do any other work, but it does seem more versatile than the CanTire pump.
anyone have any other recommendations?

thanks

they have a really nice small 5 gal that goes on sale for $40, comes with lots of attachments.
It has a quick connect too. I went to Princess Auto and bought 5 more quick connects for $7 to put on the other items so I can just pop off and go.

I bought a $20 one from Wal-Mart where you pump by stepping on it with your foot.

The last air compressor I bought with a 12V cigarette got too hot and burnt a fuse!

If you want a real (smallish) compressor, then look into Makita and Dewalt, some pop up on Kijiji once in a while. I have read tons of reviews, and many CF/MM/whatever other low-end compressors die quite fast.

If you just want a compressor to pump up your tires, why not get a cheapo 12V plug-in compressor? It dies - get another one, they are like 20 bucks on sales.

I bought the red one you posted a link to from CT on sale for $20 or $30. It lives in my trunk and works infinitely better than the old poverty compressor I had. Keep in mind that it requires 12V and pulls around 11 amps, so it may not be the best compressor for a garage situation as running it for an extended period off your bike battery would not be recommended.

For a garage, a real air compressor is always handy, it will generate enough flow to help seat beads, use a blow gun, or operate air tools (intermitent use only with a small compressor).

I bought a Makita MAC2400 as it has decent capacity and it is damn quiet (easily able to carry on a conversation right beside it while it's running), but it is much more than you need for just tire inflation. My dad has a Porter Cable pancake compressor (oil-free so no maintenance) that has been going strong for more than a decade. Getting a compressor with a tank also allows you to fill up tires(1 or 2 depending on the size of the tank) while away from power.

Good luck.

I use a 15 gallon Campbell Hausfeld. If you want it for anything more than filling tires I wouldn't buy anything smaller than an 8 gallon.

All I do is pump up tires, and I bought a hi-volume bicycle pump from CT and it works fine. Portable, no need to plug anything in, and you get a mini-workout! OP says that's all he wants it for, I find the bicycle pump a lot easier and less complicated. And I can take it on the road to fix flats.

I use a 12v one that I run out of my car. Cheap and I've used it to fill a 5 gallon portable air tank from time to time too. I keep it in the car in case I need to inflate my tires or someone else's on the road. My battery on the bike is such a ***** to get to that I probably wouldn't consider it for bike trips.

I'd get a compressor with a 3 gal tank for that use. Also good for blowing dust out of computers and other electronics. Once you got it, go to princess auto and get a quick connect coupling set and some attachments.. My favourites:
1) Tire inflator http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/0433797/Tire-Inflators/Pistol-Grip-Air-Inflator <-- It's on sale get it now!!!

2) http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/8232860/Blow-Guns/4-in.-Lever-Grip-Blow-Gun <-- also on sale, saved me tons on canned air

are there any quick connect that hook to a compressor that have a decent gauge and a angled head?

The clearance on the Burgman 650 is so tight given brakes etc that even getting the damn thing hooked up is a chore.- let alone on and off to get the pressure correct.

I use a hand pump as well but the gauge is iffy and it's a bunch of work to get to 42 psi on Metzlers.

Bought a Campbell and hausfield trigger air inflator gun at crappy tire for $15 yesterday. Comes with a gauge and flexible head should work fine for bikes. I like the air compressor for things like staplle guns for recovering seats etc.

If you have any Ryobi tools, Home Depot is clearing out their little One+ compressors that fill up bike tires and air mattresses. I bought 2 I loved the first so much. $30, but comes with no battery and charger.

I posted the link for a pretty decent one.. You get the quick connect couplings separately, just choose the ones that fit your needs.
