Ah Nostalgia... Went to Mother's tonight...

Anyone in their mid 30s and up might have memories of going to Mother's Pizza back in the day.

Good old Wikipedia... Info on the "new" Mother's and the original...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother's_Pizza

I have very fond memories of the original Mother's Pizza. However, I also remember the late 1980s and how they had started to lose the plot to when they went to take out and the quality and product was barely recognizable from what was the norm in the 1970s.

So, how does the "new" Mother's stack up to the original?

Like a Phoenix rising from ashes the new Mother's has its start in Hamilton and I went to their new location in Kitchener. From inside it is not the Mother's I remember from the 1970s. However, that is not itself a bad thing. It is like the old Mother's reinvented with a modern take on the decor. So, almost like the chain never went away and it just went through a natural progression.

Yup, Tiffany lamps... Check!

Menu has what you would expect. Pizza, lasagna etc...

So... what was my experience like? I think it is still early days for the company. The pizza was phenomenal. The sauce was super, good amount of cheese, ingredients were fresh. In short, the pizza was excellent.
This was the "Mrs. Maloneys"

The Caesar Salad had an in-house dressing. It needs more garlic in it and initially they did not put enough dressing on our salad. Once they added more you can see they are going in the right direction. Real garlic in the salad, in-house dressing, fresh lettuce etc... They still have floats and other things I remember from back in the day.

They have an interesting regular promotion in their menu where you can buy a pizza to take out (if you are already dining in) for half price. Why not?! Meet the "Grandmothers":

I hope they succeed. They need to not let the quality lapse. This is what killed the original Mother's. After Mother's and Frank Vetere's went the way of the Dodo Bird there was really nothing left. I hope they slowly grow, slowly add to the menu.

Sorry to break it to ya, but the new Mothers sucks.

Quality is horrendous. Pizza is disgusting and of cafeteria quality.

Only like the old Mothers in name, thats it. These guys won't last.

Interesting... I wonder if the Kitchener location is doing something different from the Hammer location? I honestly enjoyed the pizza we had.

Not all of the Boston Pizza locations are the same. The one in Waterdown is very good as is the newer one at Bingeman's in Kitchener. The one in Guelph is nothing to write home about.

Looking at the pizza in your pictures, it looks to me like the classic "conveyor belt" cooked pizza. They take a pre made frozen pizza, throw it on a conveyor belt, and cook it.

The old Mothers was never like this.

They make the dough in house every day in a giant Hobart mixer, its a fresh made pizza. Sauce is made in house as well. The old Mothers was an ok restaurant , this will be ok to. You don't go to chain restaurants for great food, you go for value and to get fed in a predictable fashion.

Mother's was my first waitressing job back in high school in Pembroke. The metal pans on the metal risers were the bane of my existence. However it and another waitressing job paid my way through college.

Thanks Mom!

Awesome, I used to love getting a root beer float as a kid. Thanks for this, I'll have to head out that way and try it out for old times sake.

Used to love the Mother's near Younge and Major Mackenzie in Richmond Hill in the late 80's. Would finish my shift at O'Tooles and head across the road for pizza and a pint.

we still got one of those mother's glasses...kennedy and sheppard, represent!

Danforth road and Danforth Ave first part time job other then delivering newspapers have a few of the glasses somewhere loved those coke floats.

Used to go to Mothers in Brantford, back in the 70's and 80's. Of course I was a kid then. Huge sense of nostalgia...

They're doing REALLY well in terms of sale for their square footage. BOOMING.

Don't hold your breath for them to close quickly.

Pembroke has a high school? I thought everybody finished at grade 8 and either worked the plywood mill or went upstream to Deep River to teach.

Mothers Westdale Village Hamilton 1970's. Always a special treat. Also Big V Drug Stores' slant 6 Duster no match for Mothers' Toyota Corolla racer.

I gotta give this a try again! Do they still have the giant cookie on the menu?

Seriously, just save your money. In this case, nostalgia is overrated, and the Mothers pizza is trash.

If you want one of Hamiltons best pizza joints, the way Mothers *used* to be, visit Chicago Style Pizza up on the mountain.

Agreed that Chicago Style Pizza is great. I used to get pizza from Bronzies back in the day when I lived there too...

I am also a fan of La Cantina downtown but I think it is not what is was in the late 1990s...

For anyone around Cambridge that wants to try good pizza...

Andy's Pizza a couple of doors to the right of Coffee Culture in downtown Cambridge (a hop, skip, and a jump from the Ainslie Street Bus terminal).

The owner is actually named Tony and he bought it from Andy decades ago and never changed the name! They are constantly making fresh dough and you can see them putting it through the machine to thin out the dough and then spin it to make it into the pizza shape. Not the cheapest pricing but very reasonable. On weeks that I am done earlier I will drive into Cambridge, go downtown and pick up a pizza and then drive onto Guelph from there.

I have heard that Pepi's in Kitchener is very good as well. Just wanted to put a plug in for a real "Mom and Pop" type establishment. Tony is there with one or two of his sons most days and he has an employee Joe who has been with him for decades. Cool that these sorts of places still exist. :)

That is Tony on the right putting Zoodles pizza into the box so I can take it home... :) Edit: That is Joe on the left who has worked with Tony for literally decades.
