Advice on purchasing "track only" bike

Hi guys,

I'm looking into buying a track only bike. I found a really good deal on an already track prepped bike however I've got a few concerns. First thing, there is no title to the bike and there is also no VIN stamped on the bike. The person that owns the bike doesn't know the origins of the bike as he also purchased it from someone else. Keep in mind that if I were to buy this bike, I would NEVER be registering it and riding it on the street.

Just wanted to see what potential issues I could face.

Thanks for your input.

There are clean titled track bikes around, if you're in no rush they come up every so often.
They're usually worth a bit more though.

I was in the same situation as you before I made my purchase and I got a great deal on a low KM, clean title CBR.
It takes patience.

My ex just bought an 07 Gixxer 600 track bike, same deal. It used to be a street bike, crashed it, insurance wrote it off but he bought it back from them. New frame was purchased directly from Suzuki and has no VIN# stamped on it. The guy knew all the details, not sure if I'd be overly worried if he didn't though. Did you look at the vin area on the frame? it should be totally perfect and blank if it's a no vin frame. If it looks like someone chiselled it out I'd be a little worried.

Thanks Gixxer6, I did read that thread already but it doesn't discuss any of my concerns which were 1. No title and 2. No vin and ownership.
I'd be asking questions if it didn't have a VIN but there's plenty of track bikes (including mine) with no ownership. Lots of no-VIN bikes are legit but I'd still want to know why. Many are insurance writeoff's. You always want to make sure the bike is straight though so it's not always a great idea to look for write-offs that you don't know much about (or can't be proven straight).
One piece of advice: it's MUCH cheaper to buy a track bike that's got the track mods already done then to buy a street bike and convert it to track. A plus is you can build it to your spec but it's going to cost you a lot more. Having something already equipped with track plastic and upgraded suspension can save you tons.

Thanks so much for the advice. So just to clarify...a bike that doesn't have ownership basically means that it is currently NOT registered at the MTO?

So as an example, if I were to buy your track bike off of you, you would only provide me with a bill of sale and that's it?

again, I'm not so worried about having the bike registered as I will never be riding it on the street and when I sell the track bike, I would be selling it as such as well.

Please keep the feedback coming on what I should look out for when buying a "track bike" from the transaction side of things.

It is technically still registered with the MTO, probably to some previous owner long ago, with the old frame/vin, under a salvage title. Once it goes salvage, people don't bother keeping the registration around/up to date.

Yep, just a bill of sale, no paying tax, no messing with the MTO. Keep a copy on the bill on the bike if possible (under the seat, etc.) in case anyone ever questions the no-vin frame/no ownership.

Coolio. Thanks.

Meh, a few of my track bikes ive owned had no VIN or ownership papers.

As long as the VIN doesnt look like it was grinded off or anything, i wont be too worried.

LOL, under the seat? Sure, keep proof of ownership with you. I just don't think keeping it on the bike is necessary or even wise.

I have never been asked for proof of ownership for either of my bikes (one with ownership, other with bill of sale only) at any track in Ontario. Some friends have had no problems trailering their bikes across the border with only a bill of sale.
