Best thing is to cover it and lock the cover to the bike with an alarm so they can't turn it off and hopefully someone notices. I think there should be a service that connects your bike alarm to the security desk and then they call you. Something has to be invented as mine was stolen last year right from my parking spot on the first level and the camera's caught everything. In short, the most deterants the better. Good luck
That's a neat idea. I can see it helping out for certain cases but unfortunately there is still no 100% way to keep your bike safe in a condo without getting rid of the bike.
It's tough for condos:
- The idea of having a seperate garage for bikes only within the parking levels is really bad. Makes it even easier for the thieves since all the motorcycles are in one spot. It'd be like hitting a gold mine once they find a way to gain access.
-Wireless signals in parking garages are nearly useless, so your fancy alarm that tells you when someone is near your bike is no use.
- If you have a parking spot in the deepest catacombs of the garage, your audible alarm will most likely not be noticed if it goes off.
- Most condos use basic camera security systems, and as it has been mentioned before, any thief with half a brain will not go in with mommy's minivan. They normally use a plain vehicle that is entirely stolen, or at least stolen plates. So even if the cameras are high-tech and High-Def, they are still of no use.
- Condo security are not the police. Should they bump into the thieves and they are armed (baseball bat, taser, gun, etc), the security guard will NOT risk his life to try and stop them.
Other than the suggestions about chains and, when possible, ground anchors, I believe the next best advice is the "out if sight, out of mind" approach.
It's a real shame that most condos (from what I read) do not allow tenants to park their bikes in the same spot as their cars.
For example my friend is looking to buy a bike and she lives in a condo in the GTA. I told her before she starts looking to buy one, she should ask if there have ever been bike thefts in their parking before and what their policy is. She has a 2011 Mini Cooper. It is very easy to park 2 bikes sideways in the back of her spot and still fit the car in. Not being allowed to put one bike there is simply absurd in my opinion.
Turns out that she knows someone in her condo that does park his bike behind his car and has been doing it for years, never been told anything about it by the condo people.
That is basically a green light for my friend to start shopping for a bike. What helps her even more is she is most likely going to buy a used 250 anyways since it will be her first bike.
I can't say that I know your pain/worry because I have never lived in a condo, but even though I have my own garage and I live in St Catharines, every morning there's still that tiny little bit of anxiousness to see my bike right where I left it when I open the garage door.
Theft coverage for my bike is 125$ for the year on my policy. I signed up for it without hesitation.
