Lawyers for the Harper government argue in court that "[the government] has no social obligation to soldiers".

No matter how ****** a government treats its soldiers in practice (and this recent gang has been pretty ****ing terrible already), I don't think I've EVER heard of ANY government ANYWHERE EVER actually say something like that out loud.

Forget selling their own mothers into slavery for a ten-spot. At this point, I'm not even sure if cannibalism is off the table (only slight hyperbole there...).

EDIT: One of my buddies had a great comment:

"The difference between soldiers and mercenaries is that soldiers accept that a significant portion of their total recompense will be paid in honor and respect. If Harper only wants mercenaries then he should come out and say so."

not surprising, but still. Wow.

My (many) friends in the forces aren't in the least bit surprised this was said out loud, but there seems to be a fair bit of outrage from families/supporters.

I've even contributed to the Liberal party so the apocalypse has begun for Harpo

There is no other challenger currently strong enough to defeat Harper.
The best shot they had is/were the fighter jets.

Harper will chew up Justin in a debate unless Justin keeps on point and make it about facts and the pocket book mixed in a few jabs with the Environment. I am not a fan of Harper but I do respect his cunning and ability all without ever breaking a sweat or a hair out of place...lol

The secret is that that's not hair. It's a shell. Or perhaps a service access hatch, with a hinge hidden at the back.

Don't underestimate the growing fatigue and hatred of Harper ... any kind of this guys got to go move unites the Lib/ndp votes behind one party

I'm having trouble with Harpers heavy handed approach, but the alternative terrify me. We cannot afford a liberal gov't in office, the provincial mess should be enough proof. NDP? lets just file the paperwork in bankruptcy court now...

i don't underestimate the hatred of harper. Don't underestimate harpers ability to break the law and do other under hand tricks to declare himself pm

Haha, destroy Canada! That's a good one. We should have kept the liberals in, it would have been so much better!

It should be noted here that in the last 20 years, it was a Liberal government who eliminated the deficit and returned years of massive budget surpluses. This sound economic management has been undone by Harper - under his watch, through years of budget deficits, our national debt has grown by about $135 billion (It now stands at about $615 billion.)

If you examine the historical facts, it should be clear that Harper's economic policies have cost Canada much more than you realize.

And just to stay on topic... his treatment of our veterans is appalling.

The bigger joke is most of you will rant and cry and march over Sammy Yatim but not do one thing to protest this much more important issue. The problem with Canada isn't Harper it's stupid Canadians.

^ Apathetic....rather than stupid in most cases I think.

Problem is...as much as I hate Harper...I think Justin Bieb...sorry Trudeau is a dick.

To be fair, it was a Liberal (Trudeau) that built the deficit. When he took office we had a small debt (less than 20B if memory serves me right) left over mostly from the second world war and he bloated it into the 200B range, at least a third of where we are now but 10 times where he started.

A PC (Mulroney) pointed the ship in the right direction (GST etc.). The Liberals that came after him stayed the course. It is a pretty tough sell to give them all the credit since it was the previous PCs and them that got things going in the right direction.

Debt wise Harper has really screwed us though. With all the boomers retiring they will see a big drop in income, and therefore the gov will see a drop in income tax revenue. The boomers will keep spending though, but Harper reduced the GST so the gov will also see a decrease in this revenue. Right thing would be stand pat on GST to protect the future revenue without having to jack other taxes. GST cut did little to help employers because for many it is a pass through.

Pretty sure that all the budget documents and historical records show that the defict continued to expand under Mulroney.

Paul Martin deserves infinite credit for what he did. Not just cutting, but cutting for the most part intelligently (STAR system, etc.). Of course there were some mistakes (too much downloading, which was then copied by the Provinces in a much dumber way), and rising revenues helped out, but the past twenty years have shown that most governments around the world who attempt to cut as much as Martin did came out with way worse results.

You definitely fall into the definition of "stupid" that was mentioned before.

Martin did nothing with the Federal deficit, there was NO surplus. He just fudged numbers, downloaded more than the provinces could afford, and proclaim all is well. And fill his own, his party, and his party supporters pockets in the mean time. I bet you crow about Mulroney possibly taking a kick back for Air Canada Airbus's. Oh my!

Meanwhile Martin literally robs the state, literally passing brown paper bags of money under the table of dark Ottawa restaurants, and fudging the books almost as much as Enron...and still he is hailed as a hero...

Yup, you have the gov't and the province you deserve.
