hello all,

thanks in advance,

Dave

Hi Dave,
Any good quality motorcycle oil in 10W40 grade will be suitable.
Do you know how viscosity grading works?
The first number describes the oil's viscosity at 0C (freezing point of water).
The second describes its viscosity at 100C (boiling point).
A higher number indicates more viscosity, or 'thicker' oil.
You want oil that's thin when cold, but thicker when hot.
This is of course contrary to oil's natural tendency to grow thinner as it heats...
Liquid-cooled car engines never get too hot, and there's a big push on for fuel mileage, so new cars all use 5W30 (or even 0W30 and 0W20) these days. Thinner oil is easier to pump, therefore consuming less horsepower.
Motorcycles are different, and their motor oil also lubricates the transmission and clutch (unlike in cars).
Therefore motorcycle oils are specifically designed for transmissions and wet clutches, plus 15k RPM motors.
You bike should require no more that 3 litres oil including filter change.
You can buy a 4 litre jug of good Kawi oil for ~$25 bucks, leaving you some oil left over, which is not a bad thing.
Regards

thanks ALL for your input, MacDoc, i saw that page but wasn't sure if it was a good source

once again thanks all

I cant speak for the 2002 modle. But for my 2009 I use approx. 1.75 liters. That is assuming you are also changing the filter. If not then 1.65 l. I just use Kawi regular motorcycle oil 10w-40 grade.

Another good site is Ninjett.org. They have alot of do it yourself videos on there.
