Your bike is SCREWED!

Heh, jk. It happens on the 250's, my old 2010 250 would do it from time to time on a cold start. Most likely unburned gas in the exhaust -- happened both with the stock pipe and the Yoshimura after it. Scared the crap out of me the first few times it happened -- the first time a passerby thought someone got shot. :p

Ahh much relief to hear that. I'm glad it's normal and nothing wrong with the bike.

usually happens on a cold start or after a long period of not starting your bike. happened on my 250 too

My old Boulevard c50 would do that a few times a year when it was new.Not a big deal.My bike only did it when hot

I remember I had a large popping sound coming outta my old 2008 ninja 250r due to water/condensation build up inside the muffler maybe? Its nothing serious, and it only happened that time.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Really appreciate it! Makes me feel better knowing that it's not a big issue.

happens to everyone I know that has had a 250. Sounds like a gun shot. What happens is the carb lets fuel drop down and sits in the chamber. When you start the bike it all ignites a POP. Dont worry about it.

Just posting to confirm this has happened to me as well with the stock exhaust. (2011 250r)

My ZX6 with a Hindle aftermarket backfires almost every time I start it. Of course, I use the kill switch on the way into the garage at night to avoid waking up my kids.

And that YouTube video could be the lamest thing I ever saw. I would have stuck a broom handle in his front tire if I was that lady.
