A Kawasaki GROM?!

Should be fun! I've only seen a handful of GROMS but they seem great for in city riding....hell I'd buy one if I had the $ and space to burn. Just for commuting.

I've looked into the Grom as a cost effective erzats superbike slash sport touring mount but the wheels and engine, while to scale, are too tiny. I don't see this Kawasaki knock off as the solution. It would be cute to see other people ride it around tho. Especially in neighborhoods.

This is not "competition", it's a blatant copy, from the USD forks to the engine planform -- right down to the acorn cylinder-head nuts.

Why would someone buy this? Why not just get a Grom? Why reward cynical creative laziness when you could reward the company that had the balls to do it first?

If I put on knobby tires on this thing....could I take it onto off road trails like the Simcoe Country Forest trails near Wasaga?

On another small derail of the thread....I have seen full grown guys in my neighbourhood riding these tiny dirt bikes around...what's that about? They seemed to be booking around the park and then through the streets....are these capable of actual trails?

I ask because the cottage has space for a small bike to get through basement door, and I don't really want a big off road bike just for fun.

All the Grom (or alike) needs is 250cc so that it can be ridden on regular roads safely. Yes I've tried one, it's simply under-powered, and I don't get the fascination.

I get the fascination but I agree that any bike sold here needs to be at least highway capable. If the GROM were a high strung 2 stroke it might do alright (but then maintenance would go way up) but a 125 4 stroke that is even slower than the CBR125R isn't going to cut it in North America, IMO.

I get the appeal and have even been bitten by the tiny bike bug myself. I have a MadAss 125 in the garage and love booting around on it. Yes its slow, no it won't go on the highway, but its still more fun per dollar than any other bike I've owned. I live up in Peterborough and bombing down the back roads on the MadAss is a little dicey as it maxes out at 90km/h so cruising at 80km/h the bike is working pretty hard. The Grom has a little more top end and wouldn't be working as hard at 80km/h. I like the little Kawi and don't mind a little competition for the Grom, even if it is a copy. The Groms are selling like hot cakes and getting your hands on a new one often means paying full MSRP. I don't blame Kawi one bit for trying to take a slice of that pie for themselves.

With a Wife, Kid, job, long commute etc I don't have much time for riding anymore. I found this summer I hopped on my 125 more than my 600 just because it is so easy to wheel out of the garage and I don't feel like I got ripped off when I only get to ride for 1hr. I can bomb around town, turn on a dime, do BMX style skid stops, swing down places my 600 won't fit etc and have a blast on it. Even exploring the back roads and concessions etc up here its lots of fun. If I lived in TO I would definitely want one. Perfect place for a Grom or Z125, just so long as you don't want to use one to escape the city along the 401!

Kawi does have a KSR110 in Asia which is basically a super-moto version of this. Bring it here as a 125cc and I bet it'd be a blast!
