98 zx6r brake lever help

Hello all

I took out original lines and installed Galfer Braided lines on my 98 zx6r. I hated the spongy feeling before. rear brake is much better and hard, pedal does not travel much before it bites. front brakes are better but not as good as i thought it would be. the lever is almost half way when the bike stops completely and is about inch n half away from the bar (is that normal). I thought new lines would make it harder. It brakes fine compare to how it was before. it came to about half n inch before from the bar. i tried searching for what is the optimum distance and it said lever coming half way for full brake is normal. could be wrong so figure would ask you guys. just to add I bled the brakes couple of times to make sure it does not have any air and banjos are tight. thanks in advance

Im sorry, what is your question!?

lol. i know I sound all over the place. Ok. My question : Is it normal for this bike or any other bike that is this old to have brake lever travel almost half way when brake is engaged completely? even after installing braided brake lines. I have experienced new bike brakes engage within an inch of pulling the lever

I wil assume, you have done the obious things - like adjust lever etc...and its still has a large amont of play?

The ZX6's master cylinder adjustment doesn't take up slack or air in the piston which is probably what you've got. Older style master cylinders don't have a bleed valve so its sometimes very difficult to get all the air out of the master. I have heard good things about these:

1.25 single hose fitting. Should replace your OEM banjo bolt.

This would allow you to bleed the system at a much higher point where air might get trapped. I've never used these personally since I went with a radial master cylinder but I have heard good things about them.

thanks for getting back. I have replaced oem banjo with what galfer lines came with. i adjusted the lever and checked for air. bleed the lines about 3 times to make sure there is no air. lever comes half way when brake it fully applied

sounds like a bleeding issue. or mastercylinder issue.

How worn down are the pads?

hey, you most definitely have air in the master cylinder, try to bleed it from the Master Cylinder banjo bolt in the same way you would at the caliper bleeder nipple. Use the bolt since there is not bleeder in your traditional axial master cylinder. It can get messy, but not if you wrap paper towels around the banjos/bolt. It'll absorb most of the fluid coming out, just clean it up right away after you're done. Hope this helps! Good luck.
