92 EX 500 Carb issue?

Guy at work approached me today wanting help with his 92 EX500.
Apparently it was working fine, he went away for a week and comes back and the bike won't run without the choke being on, and it dies after he gives it throttle. So we're in to a carb issue here.

First thing I suggested is to check the fuel lines are good and that the fuel filter isn't clogged.
suggested if that doesn't work, drain the float bowl and see if it's stagnant fuel in the carb (is this thing a single or dual carb?)

After that, it would basically come down to me pulling apart the carb, giving it a clean and a rebuild kit to see if it's something possibly float related.

Any ideas or something that is a common issue on these bikes?

I'll also be pulling the plugs to give them a quick look and see if that can give me any clues.

Pilot (slow) jets are definately clogged.
You must remove the carbs and disassemble them.
New jets are cheap, and it doesn't hurt to step up a size or two on an Ex500.

lots of good info and how-to's at www.ex500.com

Thanks guys!
Was hoping it could be something simple and more external... Looks like I might end up pulling his bike apart then.

If I remember from owning mine, the fuel filter had an issue and a mod was suggested ( check ex500 forum) Also mine had bad gas in once and was a pig to start. Seafoam sorted it out.

thanks. I'll get him to drain the tank and throw some fresh stuff in and replace that fuel filter before we dig too far.
