None of the 231 passengers or crew were injured in the incident.
Two F-16's escorted the plane, which was travelling from Newark, New Jersey, US, to Warsaw after the pilot of the 767 reported, at 13.40 CET, Tuesday, that he could not lower the landing gear.
After circling the airport, the pilots went ahead with the emergency landing at 14.40 CET with no wheels and astonished onlookers watched on as the 767 landed on the belly of the aircraft.
“The pilots checked how the machine was behaving in the air. It turned out that, unfortunately, the landing gear was not working and they informed the crew to start the appropriate [emergency landing] routine,” said spokesperson for Poland's Air Force Col. Robert Kupracz.
Emergency services had prepared the runway with a special fire-proof foam before the emergency landing.
Passengers were taken to medical facilities at the airport.
President Bronislaw Komorowski told journalists at a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon that he had thanked the captain, who he spoke to briefly, the crew and, above all, the passengers, who were “very brave,” he said.
The captain told him that the landing was “difficult”, Komorowski said.
Authorities initially said that Warsaw's Okecie airport is currently closed to traffic till 8 am local time tomorrow morning but further details are expected later today.

Good work on part of the flight crew.

I'm surprised they didn't try to land it on the grass instead

more dangerous to land on the grass...plane/parts could dig in and toss the rest around. Controlled skid with the fire proof foam was the best chance.

I guess if that doesn't get your adrenaline pumping you're probably dead

The pilot is a hero and landed that bird as smooth as glass. I've experienced much harsher landings with fully functional gear on some flights in the past. I give him a close second to the miracle on the Hudson.

damn, there are MANY MANY things that have to go wrong with the planes systems for the landing gear not to deploy...there are tertiary backups on the 767....very freaky OR the pilots simply didnt know how to initiate emergency systems (highly unlikely)

Actually, I'd say landing with no gear comes a distant second to landing on water!

the water would grab the plane and potentially throw it around more, no?

I don't know about that, you'd have to convince the other 231 souls on board that jetliner;)

I'd think so. He would have to keep the nose up till the very end, so the plane wouldn't take a dive. Not as likely on a runway. If the wing and engine supports held, it's the engines taking the bring of the damage.

ummm...how do you jack that thing back up to move it???? :lmao:
