636 wont go into 3rd gear

i was looking at a bike im interested in purchasing and i noticed it wouldnt go into 3rd gear from 2nd. also getting it into 2nd was sticky.. it wasnt clicking in like its supposed to?

could this be a plate issue/tranny?

its a 636 with higher mileage ..not sure if this is a common problem

Was the bike running?
What was the temperature?
what is "higher mileage" - like 20,000 - or 120,000?
 
there are TONS of blown 636 motors around now. swap that trans.

Which gen 636? I have a 599 trans, and might have a 636 trans soon too
 
my '06 636 with 16k km has the 2nd gear problem, sometimes it slips when im shifting up to 3rd at high RPMs, maybe 8k+? but catches fine at lower RPMs.

Anyone has comments or suggestions abt this issue??

the bike was running yea.. while riding it goes into second from first but its sticky and from there doesnt move up any more .. feels like im on 6th and cant go higher.. about 40,000

I don't even know how many of these bikes I've owned and I've never had this problem...hmmm
 
I know the 05-06 had a second gear problem, and you mentioned second is 'sticky'

could also be the shift fork

My 636 had second gear problems too...but I could skip past second into 3rd. It first started with some occassional slipping from second into nuetral, then eventually it would never hold in second. It was 3 months past warranty, but Kawi acknowledged the fault and paid for parts. I sprung for labour. It was a 2005, back in the UK and ended up costing me 400 pounds in labour alone. The problem only gets worse until second gear is useless. I rode around jumping from 1st to 3rd for a month before I could get in the shop. The whole thing deteriorated from occasional slipping to complete 2nd gear fail in 3 weeks.

Kawi was at first suspicious of wheelies, but I swore I never pulled a wheelie in second (which was true). I had only done wheelies in first, which I admitted. Kawi still paid for parts. It seems it was a known problem.

What kind of rearsets on this bike?
Ive had 2 636's come to me this year with shifting problems, both were due to ****** china/Ebay rearsets that were not moving smoothly and hanging up the shift mechanism causing miss shifts ...

My 636 did that. I took the rearset off, disassembled it, cleaned and greased all the pivot points, put back together, worked like new.
