636 engine mount bolt

Trying to install a cage on a 03 636. Need to remove the rear engine mount bolt.

Any one know off the top what size socket to remove the rear engine mount bolt?

The bike didn't come with the tool bag.
I bought a 22mm socket, didn't fit. Might have to go 24 or 25mm.

Theres also a castle nut on the other side and what looks to be a large hole for an allen to fit in it.
Supposedly, theres a special tool for the castle nut.

I've read people don't need it but I'd like some tips before I go and strip the thing.

What are you talking about the 24mm socket and castle nut is for the swing arm, not the engine mount...The rear engine mount is 12mm socket on one side and 14mm nut on the other for the top mount

What kind cage are you installing? if your talking about a crash cage, I have seen or heard of one that requires you to remove the swing arm pivot on the 636. They either bolt through the pivot wihtout having to remove it, or the top rear engine mount...

its a sick innovations crash cage.
see the rear mount

sorry maybe my terminology is wrong.
The swing arm bolt.

The instructions refer to it as engine mount.

The cage doesn't seem to seat very well if just fitted ontop of the pivot.

Thats what you get when you buy sickinnovations, your lucky if you even got any mounting hardware from them....And they dont even know the difference between an engine mount and a swing arm pivot....

I am 100% sure you do not need to remove anything, the threaded rod goes through the swingarm pivot, its hollow.....

Some cages come with spacers that go between the cage and the swingarm pivot but none of them ever require you to remove anything from the pivot....

I know the long threaded bolt can go through the hollow pivot.
Ill take a look when I get home and post pics if needed

Thanks

PS I actually read si cages were pretty good. Had pretty good reviews anyway

Good reviews where? You have to keep in mind that on certain sites like Stuntride or Stuntlife, a lot of people are either sponsored by SI or local to them and get their parts for free or highly discounted....And therefore its not a real "I paid full price for the product review"
Ive dealt with SI before and was not impressed with the service or quality. Wait 2 months for 2 subcages, finally get them and no bolts or instructions included, Email asking for bolts and get told."we make so many different parts we cant keep bolts for all of them in stock, go to a hardware store and buy your own" No mention of what size or anything, just go figure it out for yourself.......Trust me there is much better stuff on the market nowadays....

I assure you, your not supposed to remove the nut or locking nut...Ive been building 636 stunt bikes since 2005, and have installed many different crash cages...They all sit on top of the OEM hardware, either right on them or with spacers if they were provided...

SI used to make their cages years ago in a different design, that used to mount to the upper engine mount bolt. In that situation you would remove the OEM top rear engine mount bolt and replace it with a longer one provided with the cage. That was years ago and they now mount to the swingarm pivot. So there is a good chance they just didnt change the instructions since then and still give the old one with the wrong info

Yeah you're exactly right on many accounts. I read a lot of reviews from Stuntlife and Stuntride. Also Tankdent.

You are also right about the service. I ordered it May 4th, and it took them a month to even ship it. I had to send many emails asking for status and tracking number before I could get them to ship it. As for quality.... the bars don't line up very easily. I am getting my friends to come over and pull the bars into place while I bolt them in place. Durability-wise, I'll have to drop it a few times before I can speak on that.

Instructions, yeah I think they're wrong. The end of the bar that attaches to the pivot looks like this.

It just seems weird that the only thing securing that bar to the pivot is a small nut. The bar just sits ontop of the pivot nut.

But I agree with you now that I look at it a bit closer, theres no way the pivot should be removed. I'm going to add my own grommet or something between the bar and the pivot nut.

Thanks for your insight, definitely has helped me.

Those pics look normal for SickInnovations quality....If your front mounts are already tight in those pictures, you should loosen them...That can cause the rear mount to stick out like it is in the pics. When installing the cage, you should start threading all the bolts in just slightly. Then tighten them all a little by little evenly...If you tighten one or a few all the way, before starting to thread another one, it makes it really hard get them all on...

A lot of the cage companies have jigs to weld up their cages in, if you know about welding it tends to pull and distort things...So after the cages are welded and taken out of the jig, they dont fit 100% anymore as they get warped from the welding process...Some cages are better then others, but I have never gotten or installed one that was perfect...Even the holes for the bolts are usually much larger then the actual bolt that goes into it....Again its not really a high quality tolerance part, and most of these companies started in someones garage that used to weld something other then motorcycle parts........So quality and fit is a little worse then other motorcycle parts that you would normally buy for a sportbike...

I got it on by myself actually. I had to make sure the bolts were pretty much loosened all the way out where they're barely threaded on at all.

The thing I don't really like about it is that the connecting bar for the cage actually touches the headers.

Otherwise, so far its seems everything fits. Thanks for your tips JP636.
