$6000 to $9000 - SUV / TRUCK

If you were looking to pay cash for a SUV / TRUCK....

1. Where I be able to find the best deal? (Last time I bought my Saturn from a couple that were getting a divorce, purchased it for about 2K under market value)

2. What would you purchase for $6k to $9k? (Chev. Equinox V-6? or Saturn Vue V-6 with Honda 3.5L? or a small pick up truck Sierra V-6?)

3. Does anyone know of public Auctions where I could purchase a nice SUV from? Police auctions? Addeco Acutions?

Since fuel is so expensive...i'd prefer something with a V-6 insted of a V-8....always owned V-6 trucks, the 4Cycl stuff shifts funny and are horrible to drive when I am towing a trailer with two bikes (do that often, about every other weekend...prob put about 100 - 300kms month towing a trailer)

Myself, I would get a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Liberty for that price. Maybe a Ford Escape or Hyundai Santa Fe if I found a really good deal, I do a lot of my own maintenance and repairs so the Jeeps would be first choice in that area, a bit easier to do.

5 cylinder GMC Canyon will handle that job easy and there are some good deals out there. I have a 2006 canyon3.5L and it pulls my 5000lb trailer far better than my 2012 Silverado 4.3L (but not as well as my 2011 Canyon with the 5.3L)

I was going to suggest a 2006ish Nissan X-Trail until I saw you want to tow a trailer. I'll still mention it though...out of the three SUVs (and several cars) I've owned, and the many I've rented for use this little SUV is amazing. 4 cylinders, light, surprisingly gets up to speed pretty quick considering it's not a V6 (and I've had V6 SUVs before), sips gas and it's really comfortable and maintenance has been a dream, tons of cargo space and a well designed interior. Don't know about the towing capacity to be honest. I know people do use them for towing though.

I like the Ford Escape, the Pontiac Torrent/Chev. Equinox are good choices too.. All depends on the style you like. I had a 04 escape and towed a 2600lb trailer no issues. I had the AWD model of the escape, the only problems I had with it was rear diff seals going very early (60k, but after I changed them nothing else came up).

I have an 04 Expedition for sale (haven't advertised it yet). 145k .... PM me if interested.

I have an escape (V6 AWD Limited) and an X-trail (SE..not the top model). I much prefer the X-trail for everything, handling, interior amenities, lugagge/cargo etc.

Owned an 07 VUE FWD V6 and towed nice, good power. Fuel efficient? Can't really say. I liked it though.

Own a 2010 Escape. FWD 4 banger. Towed a trailer and bike to Florida and as long as you kept it in the 100 km/h range, wasn't too bad. When you get up to 120 km/h, the 6 spd tranny downshifted and sucked up the fuel. My friend has a AWD V6 and he gets pretty much the same highway fuel economy as mine.

His is an 08 and has aged pretty well. I'm sure you could get one in the range your looking for.

The 07 Vue has that honda 3.5 V-6...250HP...so it pulls my two bike trailer with ease.....the vue would get 450KMS out of a tank with the AC on going through hills etc in West Virginia.

The ESCAPE...my sis has the v-6 FWD...and its pretty decent....and there are TONS of them for sale now....

So narrowed my choices down.

- JEEP LIBERTY V-6 (2003 - 2006)
- CHEVY EQUINOX (2004 - 2006)
- JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE V-6 (2005-2006)

The jeeps get rusty VERY quickly......but the grand Cherokee is thirst....equinox is pricy for such a crappy ride.

I would take the Liberty off that list...
The Cherokee is a great truck, just make sure you get a model with the 2x4, 4 high and 4 low options.
I know some models (can't remember which) only came with 4 high and 4 low, which is going to burn more gas.

Regarding the Equinox/Torrent, there is nothing really fancy about those and I personally hate how they perform.

Of all those ..

Id get the cherokee or the liberty in the diesel engine.

Tons of pulling power than .. the equinox i would avoid.
