Any suggestions? Portable, light, good battery and good at replaying HD video are a must. No need for an optical drive but not bothered if there is one. I'd rather have a balance of good feautures and reputable manufacturer than a feature rich piece of junk.

Not HP.

I hate to say it, but it's hard to get a good laptop for $6-700. Definitely possible to get A laptop, but the cheaper laptops always sacrifice things like keyboard, trackpad, build quality, battery life, and screen quality, stuff that actually matters.

Realistically, I'd suggest looking at about $900 plus tax. That will get you into a Samsung Series 9, Dell XPS 13, Macbook Air/Pro 13", or pretty much anything worth owning.

If you don't mind buying used, it's always possible to save a couple hundred on Kijiji for something lightly used. Here's a mid '12 13" Macbook Air going for a flexible $800, http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-...3-For-Sale-Under-Applecare-W0QQAdIdZ463111204

Maybe I'm just lucky but I purchased an ACER Aspire 5251-1940 as a temporary laptop 2 years ago and it's still kicking and does everything I need. Plays HD vids has HDMI out and surfs the net. At the time we paid less then $400 from Future Shop tax in.

I bought my sister a 13" Samsung ultrabook in feb for a bit over $600 after tax. It's on the thicker side for an ultrabook but still light and portable. Plays HD video just fine. Don't remember the exact model but it was the only ultrabook with a core i5 cpu in that price range. Believe I bought it from Best Buy on sale.

[edit] Don't see it on their site anymore but here's an Asus S56CA ultrabook for $550 [/edit]
