Gasp! I stopped using it when I retired and was shocked when I read the present rates. I was thinking half that was outrageous.


However, take note:

COVID-19 Outbreak Relief Measures​

Ontario is taking steps to provide immediate relief for those who use any of the provincially-owned and operated toll highways.

The following measures are now in effect:

  • Toll rates for Highways 412 and 418 will be zero effective April 5, 2022.
  • Toll rates for the provincially-owned Highway 407 have increased based on the Consumer Price Index effective June 1, 2022.
  • Suspended interest rate charges for overdue accounts.
  • Toll rates on the privately owned and operated 407 ETR are not impacted by these measures.

I read somewhere that it's the most expensive toll road in the world. If it's not, it's gotta be close.

When I commuted to Dixie and Eglinton-ish in my old job, it was almost $30/day to go from the QEW end to the 403 exit and back. With a transponder. That's what, 15 minutes of driving each way? The company paid, so I used it. And judging by the other vehicles on the road, about 75% was other company vehicles...

Now that I pay, Google Maps is permanently set to "Avoid Toll Roads". A buck a minute is too rich for my blood...

(Also, noticed the privately owned sections are about $0.20/km more, so no wonder they can afford to be magnanimous and not raise rates.)
 
Based on my understanding the the 407 toll rates are set based on a formula which provides a certain amount of profit based on the maximum amount of vehicles it can can carry during peak hours without impeding the traffic flow. E.g. gridlock at rush hour.
If I were to take it on a dayly basis to get to work. It would cost me at least $30 one way. So I'm stuck taking that 401 highway to hell everyday. I only use the 407 as a backup when I know the 401 has lanes shutdown because of accident for example. Or traffic is really backed up.
Also take the 407 whenever we have a major snow storm. The 407 is manintained alot better than 401.
One thing I do notice is that on the 407, the driving public seems to be alot more aware or should I say more educated than the drivers using the 401. For example if you are in the left lane and you are starting to approach a vehicle at a fasrter pace than what they are going at. They will typically move over to let you pass and give you space for you to also finish your pass and move back into the middle lanes.
Less tailgating , more use of signals etc. The 401 feels like a 3rd world higway in comparison to me.
So like anything else there is a cost associated for a better service.
 
Used to take it from Thornhill to Oshawa every morning, most of the time 401 or Hwy 7 back, total was about $3–400 a month.

A huge amount, but man is it nice to never deal with traffic and be able to comfortable cruise at 130km/h non stop.
 
$15 to $20 Burlington to Erin Mills (My typical drive) was only worth it if I was on the Goldwing and traffic was heavy on the QEW. 5 KPH on a Goldwing gets tiring especially, as was mentioned, dodging lower class drivers.

If the QEW is jammed I take the tourist route along Lakeshore enjoying the option of a coffee stop. For work time is money.

The pricing is an interesting balance as 250R-ICE notes. If it's too cheap too many people use it and it's no longer faster. As much as the 401 is a disaster one has to imagine what it would be like if the 407 didn't siphon off some of the load.

The 401 eastbound at Weston Road has to be, IMO, the worst stretch. In about a kilometer you have Weston Rod traffic wanting eastbound 401 trying to cross the 401 exit ramp to 400 North while eastbound 401 traffic erroneously or on purpose miss that the 400 ramp is one lane only and they jam the second lane.

The exit ramp to 400 north is being squeezed from both sides.
 
Mom was in Pickering and I'm just east of London. It cut a 1/2 hour off the trip and was safer due to much less traffic. As much as I hated it I used it on most trips.
 
Never use it on principle, unless someone else is paying for it. Also checking "avoid tolls" never seems to make a huge difference in terms of how long a trip is gonna take either.

I drive from the 410 to the 418 and back about once every 3 weeks at nearing $40 each way. Expensive but its a much better experience all around. Set cruise at 125 and leave it there for 90km.

I do find that I use more gas on the 407 compared to the 401. I only drive 5kph faster on the 407 so thats part of it, but you dont have a line of cars in front of you creating a slipstream for you like on the 401.
 
Don’t take the 407 often as it gets stupid expensive fast. But when I do I highly enjoyed it. Better lane discipline, have never had any traffic in however long I’ve been using it, and it’s so much better maintained.

Not looking for my bill from 410 to 115/35 and back a few weeks ago….that one is gonna hurt…but saved at least 1.5-2hrs by doing 130 instead of 50.

Interesting observation. You also drive a brick on stilts. That shape needs all the aero help it can get.
