407 Confusion

I see bikes on the 407 all the time but what about a transponder? Do bikes have a special motorcycle transponder or something or are they exempt from the toll charges because they are so small? I prefer the 407 to other 400-series hwys any day (404 not too bad) but i don't want to be stuck with tons of toll charges because of no transponder (haven't gone with the bike on 407 yet)

If you have a transponder for your car you can link you bike to your account. Then you don't have to carry the transponder and you will not receive the video charges on your bike. If you don't have a transponder for your car you are sol.

There's a running thread about this and apparently you can have the bike plate number linked to a car plate so you get the mileage charges but no photo fee. If you don't have a car you can get a transponder and even if you don't carry it with you they don't charge the photo fees.

The above is hearsay from the forum. You can call 407 to find out your specific options.

Awesome Thanks! I was thinking "uh transponder velcroed to gas tank, dash, where would it go?" But i like the linking better:) Thanks!

If you really want to use a transponder it can be in your trunk or in you pocket and still work. If you take the ramp and excessive speed (170+ km/h) the camera wont catch you, I know this for a fact. Or some people have flip plates or have their plates further under the tail section to avoid toll charges.

To each their own. It's not my road, I don't judge.

This is true... as I have my bike plate linked to my account and do not get charged video toll charges.

Motorcycles do not pay video fees. You do not require a transponder. You do not require the plate linked to another account. Check the 407 web site.

Actually they do charge you toll route charges; even on motorcycles. I got caught recently. Guess my plate must have moved slightly to be visible to the camera. That is unless you call their customer service line to have your plate exempted.

I recently took one of my extremely rare trips on the 407, with my motorcycle. I was charged the trip fee, account fee, and the video toll charge. Got the bill right here.

250R-ICE was referring to the video fee. Everyone pays mileage.

Yes, video charged were added along with mileage. I should have been more specific. Bill right in front of me.

If you get charged a video charge. (which I did on my first few trips). Call the 407 number and they will credit or remove the video charge. They will also flag your plate for future reference. I had to tell them twice before they stopped charging me. You will pay the regular mileage toll charge....

from the 407 web site:

Q. Do I need a transponder for my motorcycle? A. You are not required to lease a transponder for motorcycles. Simply contact 1-888-407-0407 and give us your motorcycle licence plate number(s). We will flag your account so you are not billed the Video Toll Charges.

you have to register your motorcycle plate with 407 (i.e. open an account with them) to not get charged the video fee.

you don't need to carry a transponder on a motorcycle.

Question...if they can flag motorcycle plates (cause it's not reasonable to put a transponder for them), why don't they flag car plates and eliminate the use of transponders all together (besides a cash grab)?

I think you just made too much sense. Please stop, someone may listen. Its definately a cash grab and a way to try and avoid errors which happen anyway.

A few thousand vs. a half a million?

I have a transponder for my truck. If you want to use the 407 on your bike as long as you have a transponder already in your name all you have to do is call the ETR office give them your plate # for your bike and they will link it to your account and you will not require a transponder for your bike.

They *do* charge you a transponder fee though, even though they don't give you one.

Why do people keep inisiting you need a transponder for the bike...... You do not need a transponder for the bike and if they end up charging you a video toll charge (which is what they charge cars, trucks etc for not having a transponder). Just call them up and they will reverse the charge and flag your plate..... You do not have to link the bike to a vehicle with a transponder.

Its 4 bucks a month for the transponder fee.... I still have mine though I hardly use the 407. Every couple months I toss $20 onto my account. I spend more in coffee in a week.... And its worth the elimination of a traffic headache on those days when I take it.
