40 year old who is just getting his G1 and M1 - I know, embarrassing -but I need help

Hey folks. Did a search and read all the "read before posting" info - but didn't find an appropriate answer. I believe I am a rare case.

I am 40 years old and never got around to getting my licence. Anyway - I finally need one. I'm going to get my M1 and G1 this friday - and the following weekend I will be taking a motorcycle safety course, along with my M2 test. I understand I will not be able to get my official M2 for at least 60 days.

Anyway - here are my questions:

1. Can I be insured without having my official 'M2' only the certificate saying I passed the test - and does it matter that I only just got my G1?

2. If the answer is yes, I can be insured - are the quotes I have received online in the range of between 900-1300 accurate for something like a 250cc Rebel? Or will I, in reality, be paying far more for a full-year of coverage.

Thanks for your help.

Hey roark, welcome to GTAM. I'm sure a lot of people will chime in and tell you to use the search feature ( ;) ) but my answers are...

1. Yes... and yes. You can be insured with a M1 and, in fact, some companies couldn't care less which M license you have (eg, State Farm). However, they do care about the length of time you've been licensed. Again, using SF as an example, they're looking for 5+ years. If this is the first time you're getting a drivers license of any class it probably will matter to insurance.

2. I can't say whether those quotes are accurate. It depends on a number of factors but I suspect your age and the cc of your motor helps. Best thing to do would be to call them (or a broker) up directly to get a quote.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. While not common I'm sure there are people who have been in this situation. Being older my advice would be to check with td. They've been great for me and in my case were much cheaper than state farm. Good luck

just checked TD...you were right. Only 982 a year for a 2005 rebel - i said I just got my m1 and the they didn't even ask how long I've had my G1 for - which I also just got. Weird.

Anyway - thank you - definitely on the lower end of what I've been quoted.

State Farm and all state are the 2 that ask if you've had any experience with your G licensing. I believe SF requires 5+ years of having your G.

Definitely look into gettin insurance from TD MM since they'll insure you with your M1 for sure, and they pro-rate it for the remainder of the season (until jan). I'm 21 and paying 1,500$ for a new ninja 250 until From July-Jan. You should get your insurance for much much cheaper this year, call them in

I would also recommend check DGI, (Desjardin) they will insure M1 drivers, and I have found them to be cheaper than others.
