So for the past year I have been paying for a streaming service.
Yesterday I receive an email stating they are doubling the price, but if I want a cheaper solution I can take the version with commercials.
I cancelled..

But, this got me thinking of just how foolish we are as consumers.

Years ago everyone raced to leave cable TV for three main reasons Commercials, Cost and being forced to buy packages instead of channels.
So we get streaming services. Cheaper, watch what we want etc.
Now it seems to have done a 360. The cost of a few streaming services can be equal to the cable bills from the past, they are merging them into packages and they are sticking commercials back into them..

I just think this is funny and sad all at the same time..
Oh, don't want to hear about your android box. This is not about the service it is about us as consumers.

One word "economics"

There is a cost to make and to buy content. The "original" streaming services ran with thin margins or more so at a loss to get subscribers away from cable. Now there is competition for subscribers between streaming services and THEY still need to pay for the content etc. The multiple providers also split (unique) content and compete for content so we need more than one service.... I always knew this was coming, yes in the end streaming will cost more than what people paid for cable (already is in many cases). It will continue to get worse as sports and other content gets more and more moved over to pay streaming.

Talking legit streaming and legit cable not theft.

Hopefully Netflix catches on soon that spending so much making terrible movies is not the right path. Pretty much every movie they make is awful. That adds a few dollars a month that needs to be passed along. Their TV shows are for the most part far better. No idea why there is a chasm between them.

I only have prime video for prime shipping. It has been circling the drain for a while. 90% of the things I try to watch on it require an additional subscription that I am unwilling to pay for.

My guess is the accountants figured it might be better to make in-house content they own in perpetuity than to go into the open market and compete to rent content from movie studios. Not so much if the content is crap though.

BTW this model works brilliantly for Disney+ as they are the studio and the streamer. They also saw this coming and thought we better do the same...

As I noted, next big move will be more live sports moving to streaming only services, already happening, hold onto you wallets sports fans.

This is exactly the reason why they took back the rights for the stray Marvel titles from Netflix and ABC. So they could shovel content straight from the factory floor directly into the consumer's mouth all under one roof...

The House of the Mouse ain't no dumdum!

Aye aye Jim Lad. Hoist the mainsail. Pieces of 8 ye landlubber!

Back on topic. Netflix has been making some good stuff among the dross recently. The Good Nurse was very good. No way am I paying for a streaming service with ******* ads though. That’s like paying for scuba diving equipment with holes in.

Yes, however, it's 95% dross, 5% good though.

IMO, Apple TV+ has a better signal-to-noise ratio. I've been impressed with a lot of their original offerings. Most of my favorite shows are on Apple TV+:

- Severance
- Ted Lasso
- Servant
- Mythic Quest
- Dickinson (one of my wife's favorite)

And shows that I think are okay, are still better than anything on cable:

- For All Mankind
- Foundation
- Long Way Up
- Shining Girls
- Defending Jacob

The nice thing about streaming services is that you can unsubscribe and subscribe back anytime. No need to pay for them if you are not actively watching something.

It is coming around not so much to cable as much as weekly episodes ....back to the 50s and 3 channels.
That said the format of the streaming series tells a much more complete story than a movie.
Big epic productions spanning years of productions.

Ads are a nono for me - I use Brave for Youtube to eliminate ads there.

There is a huge demand for content that is funding actors and indies around the planet. Explore some of Korean and Scandanavian offers on both Netflix and Amazon. The French Transferts is brilliant.

Apple at least keeping the price down and Shantaram alone is worth the price of admission.

I can always find something on the streaming sites or revisit an older movie like Master and Commander.
If you can't find something to watch I think it says more about a narrow framework.

I mean really guys, have you checked the price of a book lately ??? It's $14 for a single audio book and up to $22 for some. Even paperbacks are way high.
Streaming remains an incredible bargain - especially 4k productions.

What is it about? Never heard about it

Some program about two old guys doing an activity that only old men do. They try to put a fresh, young spin on it, not realizing that only other old men are going to watch their TV show, thus alienating the only audience that would be remotely interested in it.

One word: Tubi
It's free, light on commercials and full of older stuff without dragons and cgi. They have enough old shlock to keep me entertained into my dopey years.

Were considering getting rid of Netflix but the kids love it and their silly movies are good watching for kids.

Disney+ is great and I enjoy it.

Prime is only for Prime shipping but I rarely buy anything any more so that may be the first to go.

We also have a cable box which basically has everything but sometimes it’s a pain to find something good…or working.

Best bet IMO these days for stored, non-live content streaming to save money is to rotate services, binge watch content, cancel, rinse and repeat. You're stuck if you really have to watch when it comes out and therefore have a bunch of them at once. They are trying to not drop all content at once now (one episode a week) but really you can get the service for a month or two once what you want to see is there.... right now none charge an activation fee AFAIK.

Like I said, sports is what is coming down the pipe and watching live is a bigger draw here--and they know it!
