2nd gear whine, especially on decel, what to do? 09 R6S with 23,000km's

I just bought an 09 R6S with 23,000km's on it. When I took it in to get a safety done today, the mechanic said (among other things) that there is a whine in 2nd gear, especially during deceleration. He said he's seen that 2nd gear problem on R6's before, but they don't really work on sport bikes so couldn't offer me any advice other then skipping through 2nd during shifts.

Is this something I need to fix? Is it likely to get worse all by itself (i.e. even with nice smooth shifts into 2nd from now on)?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

might want to check out r6-forum as well, alot of people can chime and possibly give you an answer

Gear whine is a tooth contact issue generally. Straight cut gears generally do whine, sometimes more loudly than others, so it's not necessarily a problem. My 2003 R6 whined in 5th and I was the original owner so I know what had happened to it. Did it from day 1 and I believe the S you have is the same transmission for the most part. If it's not horribly bad, I wouldn't worry about it. Shifting won't make a difference, that's a dog issue. If there is a problem with the gear teeth, IF, then it will get worse simply by riding in that gear.

Keep an eye on your oil when you change it to see if you have any metal in the filter or oil. When you have some time, take it to Z1 or Pro 6 and let them hear it. They'll know if it's abnormal or not.

Thanks. It's going to Z1 soon for a dyno tune with the PCV so I'll be sure to mention it to him and get him to have a listen.

Pretty sure my bike has the same tranny as yours.

Is it Tucker or Sucker? Burned, ouch. Now I understand why you ask so much for your modded bikes over other sellers.

Is this before the Redline thread or after?

Same time?? meh

i think my r6 started having the same problem at 1-st i thought my tire is slipping but then i was on 401 4th gear and my rpm went from 10 to 14 and bike didnt pull, then i knew it had something o do with trany- clutch... this happens pretty much in all gears

In higher gears when the rpms shoot up its a clutch issue...maybe your plates were done?
