24,000 km Service - 2008 Kawaski Z1000 - London

Hey guys,

I was hoping someone local or not so local could help me out with the 24,000 km service on my 2008 Kawasaki Z1000. I'm currently about 4000 kms away so figured I should get out ahead of this search.

I am capable of doing the once over on it and changing the air filter and probably even the spark plugs. What I need help with is the valve adjustment/check, I would probably have the spark plugs done then if someone is in there.

I talked to the local Kawi dealer (Inglis Cycle) and they quoted $1100-$1200 for the entire service and all parts required. I like Inglis and know they do good work but that seems steep to me.

Does anyone know anyone local (london) who could do the service for me? I don't mind traveling to an extent.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Zaid from Z1 cycle tech did the valve lash, plugs, coolant, suspension setup on my Z1000.

Price with parts and labor was quite reasonable compared to your quote.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to make a few calls locally and I am PMing with a few people from the forum as well. SNAFU what did all that cost you? PM me if you don't want to say publicly.

I called Inglis back yesterday and asked for a quote for a paired down 24K service. For valve adjustment, plugs installed & sync'd throttle bodies will be $600 plus tax. That seems a lot more reasonable to me. If anyone on this forum is capable of doing the above please PM me and we can talk about a quote and possible pick up and drop off.

Do you have a list of what the service would include? I get shops have to make money, but this sounds like quite a bit. If it was for a V4 with VTech I could understand, but I4's are fairly straight forward.

Consider picking up the factory service manual (you can buy them online usually for <$50). You can usually find online copies if you look on the bike specific sites (i.e. there is probably a Z1000 forum). I'd assume the majority of this is for the valve check, which is fairly straight forward process. The service manual will have all the tolerances, diagrams and instructions you would need to do this. A feeler gauge is $5. Adjusting the valves takes a little more (depending on if it is shim style). The machining of engine parts has become quite good over the last decade, the need for adjustment is less and less as the years go on.

I have a service manual for the Z, I am just not comfortable undertaking the project.

I have no problem switching fluids and torquing all required bolts and all the other more trivial tasks on the 24K service. I don't even have an issue removing the tank and getting it "prepared". I just don't feel I have the expertise to start trying to check if the valves are in tolerance. I feel at that point i'd potentially be doing more harm than good.

To each their own. You could always consider inviting a friend over that has done it before. As an alternative, check out the OSR (Ontario Sport Riders) facebook page, they are based out of London with some really good guys that have been riding for a long time. If you have it prepped with the tank and valve cover off its only 15 minutes to check each one. I'm sure a case of beer will convince one of them :)
