Looking at buying one, First let me say it is asking for an oil change. While driving the add oil lite comes on, checked and it was at the bottom of the stick. But not just that it has stickers in the engine bay probably 5 or 6 saying it's had all these recalls.

Looking for someone with some experience on these cars to give me the good and the bad.

If I'm not mistaken all of the vw group 2.0 turbos have a recall for the water pump.

Another issue is the carbon built up on the intake valves.

I've been eyeing in getting a GTI or an R and those are the most common issues with those engines.

We have a couple at work(standard issue salesman car). Generally good performance and dependability. Maintenance is expensive, and a couple have had oil leak problems.

I think we might be selling a loaded 2021…

The Tiguan 2.0 is budack cycle and operates differently than the 2.0 in the cars. It trades power for increased fuel efficiency. Afaik, you can't change the cycle.

If you maintain them properly, they are pretty good (other than known issues with water pump that are pretty common). If you treat them like crap, they will punish you with bills. Low enough oil to trigger a light is not a good sign.

Carbon buildup is because they are direct injection. European ea888 have mpi so they don't suffer the same issue. You could convert to mpi but there is no way I'd bother with that expense on a tiguan.

Do you have a good independent vw shop near you? Those are your friend. I know of one in vaughan and one in barrie. I don't know of one out your way.

If you want to borrow vcds to scan a potential purchase, you can borrow my cable. It's one generation old so it may not be able to scan one module but iirc, that is the mmi so not a huge deal.

A used vw with an unknown history would be low on my list of potential purchases. Especially the mom mobile. They are less likely to have had conscientious owners.

low oil light would be a signal to walk away . how many times/ months was the engine operated that way ? VW / Audi build very tight enegines with really close tolerances , and they are Godawful expensive to repair at a dealer . I have owned 2 , from new . Nothing was reasonable for a repair .

Depending on when the last oil change was, low oil could also be a sign of a significant leak or excessive consumption. Check to see if there is a sticker on the windshield to get an idea.

"Excessive consumption" is an interesting topic. I can't remember if the vw threshold is one or two L/1000 km before they consider it excessive. Either way f me. I think the oil is around $16/L so that drives up the cost per mile substantially if you get one of the motors that eats oil. It's a low percentage that do that though.

I've got a bunch off records, but are in french...

This car was registered to red bull Canada, i'm guessing the k's are mostly hwy.

It was calling for an oil change on the dash, although it did flash the add oil sign, when checked it was just below the hatch marks.

Records are good. 15K km or one year max for oil changes. Less km between changes is better. Many people change at 7.5K km to fend off issues.

I don't think that one has DSG so you avoid the really expensive and required DSG fluid changes.

Really on the fence on this one, Don't want to make a purchase and regret it. my gut tells me no
I'm sure there are plenty of fish in the sea.
Look for another one.

Go with your gut. An abused EA888 is a very expensive thing.
They also have a subaru forester with 74k's on it, 2019. base model nothing special. heated seats, power options no aluminum wheels

Are you looking for a vehicle that will hurt your wallet? I thought about buying a used subaru once and thankfully came to my senses before I pulled the trigger. Do you need awd? Can you get away with a little smaller? If I'm looking at 5+ year old used vehicles, I would be more in the honda/toyota area as I am less likely to get smoked down the line.

Needs to be AWD for my daughter. Looking at pricing i don't want to be above the 20 mark 21 at most. trading in a 2014 CRV with 250 on the clock

What's the issue with the CRV? It should be good for at least another 100, probably 200.

Mazda CX-5 isn't a terrible option and is one of the few that comes in nice colours.

In case someone needs a new EA888 Gen 3 engine.

I'll leave this link of a post in the mk7 forum where someone purchased a new engine for their GTI from China for something like 2.5k USD. It seems that so far so good.

Burning oil, and cam lobe is pitted. Already have a 2020 CX5 touring that my wife uses and i can say it's a solid car

A QC-registered company car assigned to teenagers delivering bevies to promo events while jacked on RedBull.

That's the car I want...do they have more?
