Hey all!

I just recently got my M1 license in early August and I'm looking at buying a 125cc scooter for the end of this season and next season. I'm trying to figure out whether or not it would be worth it based on the insurance. I've done some online quotes but have found them to be in the $2,000 range (for only liability coverage - not looking for any comprehensive or deductible).

I'm 23 years old, have my G license (been driving for 7+ years) with no incidents.

Possibly related, my father has a scooter and a motorcycle, but I'm not sure if that helps. What is my best option for getting insured as cheap as possible. If my father would put me under his policy, is that a viable/good option or should I go solo? Where should I look for insurance?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

I highly recommend State Farm. I've got an agent for you if you PM me.

that or talk to your dad's agent if he has a good relationship with them. maybe they can get you a good deal.

$2000/year for a 125cc scooter??? Wow. When I first started riding last year I called around and found SF to be the best price by far in comparison to all the other insurers. I also started looking at scooters but when I saw the insurance was only $100 more for the CBR125 in comparison to a 250cc scooter then I went with the bike.

I called State Farm and got some quotes on a few different bikes, to see the range of prices. It looks a bit more promising than I had originally seen. What are the general thoughts on the following quotes? I do think scooters are probably a good bet for a first rider, but maybe a small engine bike could also do the trick. I have an old 1982 Yamaha Seca 400 lying around the garage that I could use, but judging on the quotes I got for it, it looks like it's worth buying a smaller bike for now, and thinking about using a bigger one once I have my M2.

Quotes: (none of the bikes are the actual model I was looking at, but the agent couldn't find them in the system - or was too lazy to try hard)

1. 2009 Kymco People 150 - $1196.59/yr
2. 1982 Yamaha SR500H Cruiser - $2672.66/yr
3. 2006 Hyosung GZ250 Cruiser - $1381.24/yr

The scooter and the Hyosung seem reasonable. Maybe I should call around other places as well. Any recommendations?

Edit: I called Jevco as well, they told me that I should call State Farm.

I've contacted a few other companies that will not insure me unless I do the driver's training.

Maybe the training is worth it at $399 (tax included), which will directly put me into an M2 license. Both these things will "hopefully" reduce my insurance rate. What is the general opinion on these courses?

i beleive youll get the same quotes more or less if you get a motorcycle. SF primarily charges by ccs. try the cbr 125s if you wish.
