2007 GSXR750 Fuel Pump Kablammo?

Bike has 60,xxx KMs on it, due for a major service

Barely rode this season as I haven't had the coin to do the needed upkeep

Maybe rode 3 or 4 10 min MAX rides in the last month

Noticed a high pitch whining while at lights (because road noise is less then) ... sounds like the whine you hear when you turn the key and the fuel pump primes..

Noise wasn't present when I parked it last, nor when I started it

fast forward today - riding to Guelph for work tonight, my speedo starts going really wonky , displaying every number up to 299 then back to my current speed, until 15 mins later when it just displays a constant 0

I park the bike at work and the whining is loud, coming from under seat/tank area, key is off and out, whine is still present

go into work to get some tools, 10 mins elapse, whine is still present... pop the seat off, disconnect battery (which is SCORCHING), pull the battery, STILL whining

Whine subsides after a few more mins, after a min of quiet, kicks on for a few seconds again, then is silent and stays silent... Battery is still super hot, a bit of swelling at the sides

I let the battery cool a bit, put it back in bike and leave it disconnected

Now here's the problem - I'm about 100km from home, I finish work at 530 AM... Am I risking a fiery death if I try riding the bike home (assuming it starts) ?

Can I start the bike let it warm, disconnect the battery and try to ride home that way?

Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT ride the bike home with that battery in it. I had the exact same problem with my bike, tried to ride it home, battery exploded, dumped acid all over the aluminum frame and sub frame, cooked some wiring. You don't want that.

Fixed the wiring, put in a brand new battery, cooked it too. Measured the voltage at the terminals while the bike was running, 18.6v!!! I guess something shorted out inside the voltage regulator :( Replaced the regulator/rectifier and another new battery and all was well.

Where do you work? I could pick up and drop off/install a new battery for ya. Only way to get home safe, expect that you might cook this one too. *EDIT: I got a used battery you can have for free, not sure if it'll fit (it's from R6), but should do ya to get home.

My bike wouldn't run without a battery in it, not sure if yours is the same. Without a battery it'd probably stall at idle, especially if the fan kicked on. Might work if you pull the headlight fuse.

Sound like a rectifier and has fried your Battery. I wouldn't ride it and it likely wont run if you disconnect the battery, you are risking more electrical damage riding it and may make it into a pile of scrap if you fry too many components. Get a new battery if yours is bulging and a multimeter, you will likely find it overcharging, if so change the rectifier (Suzuki uses junk so very common).

Its probably the rectifier

Hey thanks for the replies. I work at 1000 Southgate rd, right beside the big Tim's distribution warehouse.

I am pretty sure a R6 battery will fit my GSXR. I'd rather not have the battery explode inside the bike as that sounds like a giant mess

You still risk the explosion as it is from overcharging the battery.

Isn't that the new Ontario Super Data Centre? According to the local MPP there are at least 75 highly technical people working there, someone should be able to help you out.
Find a Voltmeter, check the battery Voltage. If after being off the bike for a while it still reads over 13 Volts; you're charging system is done (R/R) and it has taken the battery with it. Running the bike without correcting the problem risks burning up other electrical parts. A new battery might get you by for a short while, but you're just going to burn it up too and once it's done absorbing all the power it can you'll burn up other stuff.

It really sounds like a reg/rec problem with symptoms popping up in the connected systems.

I've never had one of these apart, for those who have, is it possible to disconnect the regulator/rectifier? Run the system as a full loss system and it may get him home.

OP I wouldn't ride it as it is.

General consensus is to not ride it, so I'm currently awaiting a quote from Moto Limo.. anyone have any other reputable companies that would pick me up from Guelph and deliver me to Vaughan in the early AM?

Yeah, that's the place.. but Sunday night minimal staff here otherwise I would have access to a decent array of tools and expertise

From what I understand about the rectifier, they are meant to keep the voltage constant, ie 14v & also to prevent the battery from being overcharged. Both of which is happening to OP's bike

So to answer your question, no, it won't be good to run it without one. Its actually behaving like there's not one. That's my theory though

You could try EMS, just for cost comparison purposes: 416-898-2366

Check your inbox. I've worked on two badly burnt GSXR's in the last year between ...one was a 2005 and the other a 2008. It is not worth risking it.

Is it better to change both the R/R and stator after a set period of time to prevent this issue? =(

I don't want me stuff exploding or leaving me stranded!
