2005 - 2009 JEEP GRAND CHROKEE - QUESTIONS - Help?

So, I think I am going to go with a Grand Cherokee. ....my question is regarding the transfer case.

Laredo V-6 3.7L - Is this thing in AWD all the time????
Limited V-8 5.7L Hemi - there is a little button / lever to switch it into 4WD LOW...but can this be switched to RWD?

My question is that....these Jeeps came with 3 diff. tranfer case units....I just want to know which model can be put into RWD, and switch into 4x4 or 4WD LOW when I need it?

I used to have a '99 Jimmy SLT, which was in RWD, then had a 4HI and 4LO ....so it was RWD all the time besides snow storms.

Thanks!!!

Second queston...the 5.7L HEMIs have the active cylinder activation tech, from 2005+...cuts down to 4 CYL on the hwy's. How well does this worK!?

the 5.7L hemi's are dirt cheap now....same pricing as the 4.8L V-8's but the 5.7's get way better gas mileage?

If its anything like the RAM trucks, hahaha, forgetaboutit.

The RAM i had that cylinder shutdown thing, it still cost me huge to drive the thing.

I don't think it would be any different, the V-6 doesnt have too much power, the V-8's are a monster...if its getting about the same MPG......they cost a LOT less to purchase, plus a lot of options, sunroof, leather, nav, heated seats, tow pck'g

And is the 5.7L that has the CYlinder active tech? or is the 5.9L that has it??

Cylinder deactivation is more marketing than real world savings. A friend disabled it on his GM pickup and there was no change in real world fuel economy. Maybe during the government test it makes a difference.

Even though the rated MPG are similar, with most drivers I would suspect a significant fuel penalty with the Hemi. It sounds great when you put your foot into it and why buy the big engine if you aren't going to use it? Since you say they are actually cheaper to buy, that may offset the increased fuel costs. Can you get the diesel Grand Cherokee in Canada (for a reasonable price)?

Well the V-8's are about the same price and KM's as the V-6's, but you can get a TON more stuff in the V-8's. Like leather, sunroof , nav etc.

Get the Diesel,

It has the Mercedes gearbox as well, much better than the Chrysler gearbox in the gas motors

I've seen them as low as $15k

I have more like 9K cash to buy one.....15K is almost double my budget. I'd love to have the 3.0L diesel.

I have a question....do the V-6's not have a low range option? Only the 4.8/5.7/3.0 have the low range option?

Does this truck stay in 4WD most of the time? or it RWD?

They are all AWD all the time.

The low range was an option that I think you could get with all the motors.

my 2012 Ram with the 5.7 has the cylinder shut down... If you are really nice on the gas you can keep it engaged most of the time you are maintaining speed, from 20km/hr to about 120. I can get nearly 700km/tank on 90L with it on the highway.

I don't think they are all AWD all the time... My mom has a grand cherokee and it's still selectable and I think hers is an 05.

Any way you can confirm?

This is what I read...

"he standard Quadra Trac 1 transfer case is a full-time, hands-off system that splits front to rear torque 48/52. Grand Cherokees with Quadra Trac 1 also include a standard traction control system that brakes any wheel that is slipping to allow power to be transferred to the other wheels. A mid-level Quadra Trac 2 system includes a Low Range gear as well as traction control. And top-of-the-line Quadra Drive 2 features Low Range and front and rear electronic limited slip differentials."

"The Grand Cherokee is available with 2WD in the United States, but in Canada all Grand Cherokees are 4WD – or more correctly, AWD."

I bought the 3.0 CRD brand new in 08 and quatratrac 1 and 2 were my only options.......i was looking for the same thing you were but wasn't available.

What I am finding is that the V-6 3.7L come with Quatratrac 1.....the 4.8L V-8's (some) have Quatratrac 2, the limited all have the 2.

Insurance says:

Jeep Liberty: $165.85/MONTH
Jeep Grand Cherokee: $161.65/MONTH

Fuelly's people are getting better MPG on the Grand Cherokee....vs. the Liberty

I was at the auto show this year and I asked one of the salesmen about the diesel option.

He said if your objective is to save gas, you're wrong. Don't understand why

it gets "mpg estimates of 17 city and 22 highway" so it gets the best mileage for the line up

Probably referring to anyone not doing a lot of clicks and/or not working it. The CRD will be a premium even on used. And if the CRD had a tough initial life (short trips in the winter..drive it and forget it type attitudes, which some diesel purchasers mistakenly have) then cost of potential repairs exceed any gas job by about 5:1. Sometimes worse than that.

But if the CRD was in your budget (moot, we know), and
- if you found one whose history you could confirm, and
- if you planned to tow with it every w/e be it boats or snowmobiles or travel trlr and did 30k km or more per year, and
- if your daily commute was at least 30 min one way (and preferably able to plug it in at home and at work, (for longevity, not difficulty in starting)

then the diesel premium could be easily justified. For some, the premium is worth it due to the way the diesel feels and it is a very rewarding drive compared to a gas job. It has a pile of torque just off idle and urge that is intoxicating, especially when you can have that type of driving style with very little fuel mileage penalty.
The MB motor is one of the quietest, smoothest V6 diesels available. A superior engine to VW's that they use in the Touareg.

Interesting that it will stay on 4 cylinders at 120 kph even if you are being gentle on flat road with no wind. On the other hand, 20.5 mpg is not outstanding since you have to almost baby it to get 660 kms outta 20 gallons. (how I arrived at 20.5)

Is this on the truck that has been lifted and sitting on bigger rubber? That makes the mileage a bit more impressive, if so, but still makes it that much more incredible that it can sustain 120 on 4 cylinders considering how much taller gearing the big rubber and added wind resistance that a lift imposes on it.

Dont know how he got it to stay on 4 cylinders at 120km/h.

The one i had i tried so hard to keep it in that mode, but once you got near 100, forgetaboutit.

That thing sucked back so much fuel it was insane!

If I have a head wind, I can't and as soon as I start up hill it will switch off. But, to do 120 on flat with no head wind it will just barely do it, but I have to be VERY nice on the gas. 110 is not hard to maintain it in 4wd until there is a hill.
It's a bone stock (aside from a toneau cover) 2012 ram 4x4... I forget my gear ratio though. The lifted up truck was my Canyon that got the same mileage (or worse) than my new truck, and with my 5x10 enclosed sled trailer it was a huge difference, nevermind my new 7x12 enclosed trailer (which is why I needed the bigger truck).

I can even get it to stay in eco mode while slightly accelerating above 80, but again I have to be very very nice on the gas pedal.
