I had a 1998 and it ran pretty hot. They are high performance so you have to expect that. A lot of people think the 1998 - 2001 were the best years because they introduced vtec in 2002. The main complaint about the vtec was that the extra valves would start to work at 6800 or 7000 rpm and the engine was well into the power curve at that point so you would get a bit of a boost on acceleration and if that happened in a turn it would be a bit of a handful. In 2006 they changed it so the extra valves kicked in at 6200 rpm and that was before the power curve so the bike would be more manageable at the lower rpms.
