2000 R6 - regulator needs replacing?

So my girlfriend's headlights burned out (H4 sylvanias, nothing deviant from the manual). I went to CDN tire and bought a new one, thank god they only had 1 in stock. I put it in, worked for the short ride to meet up with her. Later when I went to start the bike up, the low beam blew. I was like wtf...ok i guess i can use high beam its better than nothing since its night time. 10 seconds into riding it blows. $30 down the drain just like that!!!

Anyways, I've been looking around, and it's not the bulb since she has been running H4 for years, and that's what is recommended in the manual. I bought the exact same brand. I didn't notice any other electrical problems (though her bike did shut off and not turn on about a year ago once).

So I hooked up a crappy voltmeter to the batt (I can't even read it properly, that's how cheap this thing is), and then I turned the bike on, let it idle, rev'd it a bit, etc. Now, I didn't notice the needle jump while revving, but the needle was wavering a bit (this is on a scale of 250V though, since I only had the option of 10, 250, 500V). Probably enough to be a toast regulator that is shorting out the headlights?

So I put the same voltmeter on my K7 gsxr600, turned it on, idle'd it, revv'd it..the needle stayed perfectly still, didnt' budge whatsoever. So far my conclusion is the regulator.

I've never taken a look at the regulator or anything, do you think it could be anything else before I go taking things apart? Any other troubleshooting to do? Is it difficult to remove the regulator, and if I do, do I also have to replace the stator? I'm also under the impression the regulator/rectifier is always one piece.

Its a pretty simple fix.
Id first off get a better multi to narrow down your results.

But if its an OEM rectifier, you could certainly start there by replacing it. When replacing it, have a look at the wires to ensure nothing is burnt.

Any particular place you guys go to get stuff like that? Just ebay? Surprisingly one for $40 on ebay.ca, might just order that now unless there's a local place which comparable prices.

I'm pretty sure it's the original OEM regulator

edit: I will open it up later this week to see if its just the wire connections

When i tried finding one no one had them in stock. Call around and see. If not than Ebay is a good option.

Sounds like it is over charging. I've seen bikes do that....will blow out all the bulbs that are running.

Fix the issue before it burns the bike down (ive seen this happen to)

That bike has the reg mounted right in front of battery box where it gets very poor air flow (needed for cooling) they almost always overheat and meld down the plug which eventually shorts out. unplug it and inspect before you go any further. Good news is if thats all you replace with new or spade connectors hopefully the reg and stator survive. If not then you may be in deeper. Old school fix is to move it to a better location aand extend the harness so this doesnt happen again.

Sounds hardcore to move it somewhere else, I'd need to fix up my own mounting plate in that case? The bike doesn't get ridden too much so I probably won't move it, unless I need to replace the regulator, then I'm gonna take it out anyways.

Will check it out today if I have time, especially since insurance screwed me with my car...said its not driveable and not at fault, but have to wait 7-10 days to get a license validated? wtf man, last time it took me 1 hour to get everything sorted out, this adjuster is balls so my gf will have to ride this for now
