Hey all,
Just recently ive switched my bike to a 2003 cbr 600rr. After few weeks of riding ive noticed that sometimes i have a problem with my 1st gear 'popping' out. It happens somewhat seldomly usually when the engine gets hot (not overheating tho). I roll up to a red light downshifting into first. I get the 'click' that its in gear. Than when i get the green light i release the clutch, bike revs up but theres no go. I look down and the N light is on (its not on when im parked at the light). Also sometimes i have trouble to put it in first from N. It clicks in but pops right out back to N. its not common but still annoying. Should i be worried about it? Is it a sign more trouble with the tranny are going to come? Any insight would be appeeciated.

Depending on how you're downshifting, it's not uncommon to not get first gear when downshifting. There's a big ratio change between 2nd and 1st and you're going through neutral to get there. It often fails to mesh and will not fully engage. This is why I usually roll to a stop in 2nd and only pop it into 1st either once I've stopped or at very low speed. Check to make sure you have the correct clutch lever free-play as well to ensure you don't have excessive clutch drag which may make it harder to get into gear. Also, if you're stopped at a light and you don't get a positive clunk going into gear, try letting the clutch out for a second, pull it back in then select 1st.

You need to be more worried if it starts popping out under power after you've put it in gear from a stop. That usually will mean it's either a worn shift drum, worn dogs or broken detent spring.
