Hey I'm 16 years old, I've always wanted a bike but don't know how to approach this goal. Alright, basically I want to get my Motorcycle Licence from the Ministry of Transportation as I've been told it is the safest and cheapest way. Plus it lowers insurance prices. Anyway, after I take the M1 and M2 tests and safety courses, I want to get a Honda Cbr125r or something that is cheap to operate and insure but also is beginner friendly. I was thinking if a motorcycle is too expensive, maybe a 50cc scooter would be a better way to get into riding, considering they are significantly cheaper. But I want to save myself from the embarrassment of riding one. Unless it is a sporty looking one of course something like the Aprillia rs50. Anyway, I want to know what is the cheapest way to operate a scooter or bike at the age of 16 with my M1, M2, and the safety courses. What bike/scooter is recommended and which insurance company I should choose. Also some tips on gear and what not. Thanks in advance.

Cheapest way: don't. Simple as that. You'll be paying up the rectum unless you get a 50cc scoot, and at that point you might as well get an ebike.

Well I had an E-Bike, but it unfortunately broke. From what I experienced, they are incredibly slow, like to the point where your meeting up with cars that you passed five minutes before. I guess I'm just gonna have to go with the scooter and wait til I'm older to get a bike. Do you know any good quality scooters? I wouldn't mind riding a sporty looking scooter.

Get your license, call around for quotes, and if the quotes are too high, just hold your license for another year or 2 and give the insurance companies another call. You will see a change in rates as you've been licensed for a longer period of time. Be prepared to see rates $2500+ a year on a "Full powered motorcycle" (Yes, the cbr125 is considered a full powered motorcycle).

Well I need something to ride in the meantime (this season). What are some good scooters? Do you think they'll keep up in traffic?

Here are the scooters I got in mind:
-Honda Ruckus
-Aprilia Sport City 50
-Aprilia RS50
-Peugeot Speedfight 2
-Benilli x49

What are some good motorcycle gear companies? I heard there are like airbag jacket, are they any good?

Kymco for the value and a solid ride without repair and parts issues. Benelli. Chinese junk, Peugeot, limited parts/dealers, Aprilia, you wait for parts till the Italians get off their collective *****. Honda, no issues but bare bones scooter.

Crap... I was looking forward to the x49, I found some good ads on Kijiji. I guess imma have to go with a Honda or Kymco.

The yamaha BWS 50/125 are worth looking at too.

Theres a Derbi on kijiji for $2500 and there are cbr125s for $1500. I think the costs would probably balance out when it comes to insurance but you won't be able to take the highway on the Derbi.

Hey I was looking into the brands, and where they come from. Benelli is italian, they are not Chinese junk. Italian scooters/motorcycles have a good reputation (Ducati, aprilia)

Find a clean hardly used Yamaha BWS 125. At least you have a spot to put junk under the seat. Deals are on Kijiji for '09 and newer.

Thanks for the help guys, really. Lots of support. Hopefully once I get on the road, I'll make some welcoming friends.
